By now, many of you have likely heard that sweet Byron passed away over the weekend. At 13 years old, it is likely he outlived all the other moose born in the spring of 2013, but that doesn't make losing him any easier for all who loved him. Even though he wasn't feeling his best, I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent with him last week. My heart goes out to all those at the Maine Wildlife Park who dedicated themselves to giving him the best life possible. He will be missed. 😪🫎💔

We haven't done Moose Monday in a while! Even though he is mature, Byron's antlers are not typical of what you'd see in the wild. He did have paddles for a few years, but now grows an annual set that is decidedly more deer-like. The folks at the Maine Wildlife Park believe it has something to do with living in captivity. I imagine he doesn't mind a lighter rack, especially during the summer. 🫎

Yesterday, I had the extreme privilege of spending some time with one of Maine's most iconic wildlife ambassadors, Byron the moose. For once, I didn't zoom in to get this shot- I really was this close to this gentle giant! If you've never seen a moose, the only guarantee is to head to the Maine Wildlife Park to see this guy. Thank you to Wildlife Keeper, Jade Canak; my buddy, Game Warden Kris MacCabe for rescuing Byron as an orphaned calf 13 years ago; and to all the staff at Maine's IF&W for everything they do to educate and protect our most iconic species. 🫎
