A friend and I took a little roadtrip through the mountains and made a stop at the Inn at Afton. It is now such a sad and poignant reminder of the bustling hotel it once was, a local landmark and hub for the beautiful mountains we are surrounded with and the meaning it had to the community it overlooked. It is still certainly considered a landmark, but now without the same meaning. It’s a landmark of what could be, what has been and also of the empty shell it has become. I never had the opportunity to stay, but I have fond memories of ice skating atop this once great building when I was a kid, looking out on what I thought was the whole world, praying I wouldn’t slide off of it. Laughter echoes, memories seem to permeate palpably, not just of those who knew it in its hey day, but also of those who have taken refuge in its abandonment. There are rooms full of old newspapers and documents that I pray someone takes the time to preserve.

Upon this visit, the hope I once had for it to be restored to what it once was has faded. My hope now is it will be built anew, better than it ever was. Although the kid in me will always be wistful for the past of not only the hotel but the whole mountainside nestled at its feet.
