These raw basalt cliffs will forever captivate me. The sheer force of Gaia (Mother Earth) is absolutely breathtaking.

6 million years ago, the entire Columbia Basin in Washington state was a massive flood zone for inexplicable amounts of lava.

Imagine the picturesque pools of lava one would see in the Hawaiian islands - now imagine that consuming over half of the state of Washington and about a third of Oregon.

Hundreds of these floods covered the basin and each time, layer upon layer of basalt rock would form. Leaving these breathtaking canyons, cliffs and columns as a result of these events. In some places, the basalt is miles thick. Miles!

Nature is so unspeakably gorgeous and humbling. The ultimate alchemist, able to create something so beautiful out of something so cataclysmic.
