Maddie is FOUR! ❤️

I've been photographing this little girl since she was born, and looking back through her pictures today made me laugh because... Maddie has always been Maddie.

There were sessions when she cried.

There were sessions when she smiled and played almost the entire time and then, deciding she had given us quite enough, walked right off the set saying, “NO MORE.” 😂

I can still hear her saying it.

And now she walks through the studio door giving hugs and blowing kisses... and, of course, heads straight for the snacks because she knows exactly where we keep them. 😂

We've photographed birthdays and milestones and holidays and all kinds of themed sessions with her big sister. And really, the story started before Maddie was even here, because I've been photographing this family since her big sister was little.

That's a lot of life we've gotten to share.

I think that's one of the things I treasure most about doing this for as long as I have.

Somewhere along the way, families I first met because they came to me for pictures become people I genuinely love.

I get excited when I see their names on my calendar.

I know the kids.

I remember the funny things they've done.

I get the hugs when they walk through the door.

And then one day I'm sitting at my computer looking at a little girl I've photographed since she was a baby and wondering how in the world she is already FOUR.

But there she is.

Still completely, wonderfully Maddie. ❤️

Happy 4th birthday, sweet girl.

I've loved watching you grow, and it is always such a joy when you come through my studio doors.

And please never forget where we keep the snacks. 😂❤️

I wish you could have seen what was happening on the other side of this picture. 😂

There was singing.

There was jumping.

There were noises that I'm pretty sure don't have names.

And her “Auntie” was ALL IN.

Whatever it took to get this little girl laughing, she was willing to do it.

And it worked.

Look at that face. ❤️

I was watching all of them during her session and kept thinking about how much joy one tiny person can bring into a family.

She wasn't the only one having fun that day.

Everyone had come to celebrate her.

Everyone wanted to make her laugh.

And everyone was willing to completely abandon their dignity in the process. 😂 Dad was even spotted rolling around on the floor in and out of the photo to make her laugh. 😂

She won't remember any of that, of course.

She won't remember who was jumping behind me or what ridiculous noise finally got the giggle.

But I hope someday she looks at photographs like this and knows something anyway.

Look how happy we were that you were here.

And maybe that's one of the ways children grow up knowing they were loved.

Not because we tell them.

Because somehow, all those little pieces of evidence are there. ❤️

I went digging through old Santa pictures and found this one of Eryn from 2012.

Oh my goodness. Look at that little face. ❤️

And LOOK at the hug she's giving Santa.

She wasn't politely sitting beside him for a picture. She was ALL IN. Santa was magic and he needed the biggest hug her little arms could possibly give him. 😂

And of course, looking at this now, I immediately started thinking about all the different versions of Eryn who have visited Santa over the years.

Because that's the amazing thing about Santa.

Santa stays the same. We're the ones who keep changing.

One year they're small enough to curl up in his lap. Another year they're standing beside him. Eventually you're wondering if they still believe... and then maybe they're playing along because someone younger does.

And somehow, if you wait long enough, they come back around again. They're grown, they know exactly who Santa is, and sitting beside him suddenly feels wonderful because for a minute they get to be little again.

I don't think I fully appreciated that when I took this photograph in 2012.

I was just looking at my little girl hugging Santa.

Fourteen years later, I'm looking at a version of her I can't go back and visit anymore.

And maybe that's why our Santa pictures become so precious.

He's this familiar little constant we return to every Christmas while everything else around him keeps changing.

Every year is different.

Every version matters.

And without realizing it, we're collecting the nostalgia we'll someday come looking for. ❤️

Santa returns to Cloud 9 Studios on Sunday, October 25th.

Bring me whoever your child is this Christmas ... the believer, the crier, the skeptic, the big kid who's just playing along.

Someday you'll be really glad you remember this version, too. ❤️

“They'll never find me in here!”

Meanwhile... 🦶🦶

I cannot handle how cute she is. 😂❤️

There was absolutely no question what she thought she was supposed to do with this cake. 😂

Both hands in.

Frosting everywhere.

And I love it.

We call these our First Birthday sessions, and of course the cake smash is one of the really fun parts. But when I think about the sessions I've photographed over the years, the cake is almost never the part I remember most.

I remember the baby who wanted nothing to do with the cake.

The one who dove in face first.

The siblings standing just outside my camera practically begging to “help.”

The moms trying to get one more smile.

The dads making ridiculous noises behind me.

And all the little things that tell me exactly what this family was like when their baby turned one.

That's really what we're photographing.

Not just 𝗔 one-year-old.

𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 one-year-old.

And the people who loved them, celebrated them, chased them around and made ridiculous noises to get them to laugh at this exact moment in your family's story.

Cake-covered hands included. ❤️

If you have a baby turning one this fall, now is the time to start planning their First Birthday session with us. We take care of the cake and balloons, make time for family and siblings, let your baby be completely themselves, and yes... we even handle the cake-covered aftermath. 😂

Every year around this time, something funny happens at the studio.

It's 90 degrees outside. The kids are back in school. We're barely into September...

And inside Cloud 9 Studios, we're already talking about Christmas. 😂

Sets are being planned. Props are everywhere. We're checking lists, moving things around, and starting to imagine all the little people who will walk through Cloud9Ville this year.

I love this part.

Before the Christmas outfits.
Before the finished portraits.
Before Santa arrives.

There's this moment when Christmas is still mostly an idea... and then slowly, piece by piece, the magic starts showing up.

This year's Cloud9Ville has six different places for families to make a little Christmas magic of their own ... from the Main Street and Café Tinsel and Treats to the Winter Cabin, Evergreen Conservatory, Coastal Fireplace and Santa's Sleigh Works.

And yes... somehow we're doing all of this while it's still flip-flop weather outside. 😂

Christmas is coming to Cloud 9 Studios. ❤️

If you haven't chosen your family's stop in Cloud9Ville yet, now is a very good time to peek at what's still available.

Big sister came into the studio READY for this First Birthday Session.

And I don't mean ready to have her picture taken. I mean ready to HELP!

She was exploring the studio, finding props she thought we might need, checking out pretty much everything there was to check out and making sure we knew that she was available should we require her assistance. She knew all the songs her sister loved and was ready to play director of the session.

Her brother, meanwhile, was just happy to be there. Completely different energy. He was along for the ride while his sister was basically giving off major I want to hug you and squeeze you and love you forever energy toward their baby sister.

And I loved watching all three of them together.

I think sometimes we have an idea of what a “good” sibling picture is supposed to look like. Everyone sitting nicely. Everyone smiling. Everyone cooperating.

But the part I love isn't really the sitting nicely.

It's seeing who they are with each other right now.

The sister who loves BIG.

The brother who quietly goes with the flow.

And the baby sister sitting right there in the middle of both of them, growing up completely surrounded by love.

That's the good stuff ❤️

Eighteen years ago, Lindsay and Anthony walked into my little studio with their first baby and a Clemson football helmet.

Cloud 9 Studios was only two years old. I was still figuring out newborn posing and, if I'm remembering correctly, also trying to figure out what exactly I was supposed to do with a tiny baby and this giant football helmet. 😂

We figured it out together.

They signed JB up for our Baby's First Year Plan, and back then I was just hoping they'd keep coming back for the next session.

They did.

And then they kept coming back for eighteen years.

This year, that tiny baby stood in front of me as a high school senior, considerably taller than me, saxophone in hand, trying to give me his serious musician face.

Except I've known that smile since he was in a diaper. He wasn't getting away with that. 😂

I sat down to write about what it felt like to photograph JB's senior portraits, and somewhere along the way I realized this story was about so much more than one session.

It's about Santa and Clemson helmets and turning ten. It's about watching a family grow from three to five. It's about children becoming themselves while we're busy living all the ordinary years in between.

And it's about something I couldn't possibly have understood when I opened Cloud 9 Studios twenty years ago.

I thought I was building a photography business.

I didn't know I was going to get to watch children grow up.

This one means a lot to me. ❤️

I JUST LEARNED THIS!!! 🍯😂

Winnie-the-Pooh turns 100 this year!

HOW did I not know this?! I have always loved Pooh. We’ve photographed so many Pooh birthdays over the years, and he was even one of our Baby Duck themes!

So naturally… now my wheels are turning. 😂

Cloud 9 has to celebrate, right?!

Tell me …. did you grow up loving Pooh? And does anyone still have their childhood bear or favorite stuffed animal? ❤️
