A photo that looks natural and candid doesn’t always mean that there was no direction given from the photographer.

If you feel like you’re seeing the same 5 words being repeated by every photographer and you can’t tell the difference… you’re not going crazy 😅

The descriptions we use for our photos tend to mean different things to everyone.

One “documentary” photographer might do solely hands-off candids, while another might consider it more natural posing. It’s all relative to whose page you’re looking at and their style/perspective.

Here’s an overview of a few of the words we see trending in the industry right now, and my take on them.

None are “better” than another, because photography is an art form. Art is always about personal preference and the way YOU connect to it.

Search for the photographer whose work resonates with you and makes you feel something (consistently not just in one outlier photo) 📷🫶🏼🎞️

Your engagement photos won’t feel emotional & cinematic if you’re posed the same as the hand-on-the-chest pose you do every time your best friend lifts their iPhone.

If you want the cinematic, still-from-a-movie kind of photos, you need to search for a photographer who will prompt you in that way and keep you comfortable during your session.

Being able to anticipate these moments is exactly what allows you to be fully present on your wedding day.

I am observing the best lighting, the moments of candid emotion, and the way I want to frame your photos so that you don’t need to re-do a moment multiple times, or fake your way through an uncomfortable pose.

Instead, I see everything happening, and then document it as beautifully as it unfolds 📷✨
