A few weeks ago, Kaylie Wynn and I visited Pennhurst Asylum for a photography tour. We have seen shows on the history and the hauntings at Pennhurst for most of our lives and finally got the chance to go.

“Pennhurst opened its doors as a facility to house people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who were deemed unfit for society. It was intended to house no more than 500 residents, but it was overcrowded from the start. By 1957, the institution had more than 3,500 residents with just 600 staff, from groundskeepers to aides. Throughout its 79 years of operation, about 10,600 people lived there. About half died in the institution, many due to the poor living conditions.”

Through the years the conditions continued to be extremely poor. A documentary called “Suffer the Little Children” came out showing the deplorable conditions and abuse the patients were suffering. It took close to 20 years after this documentary to completely shut down Pennhurst and charge many staff members with abuse as well as other charges.

Today, Pennhurst is open for tours, like the one we went on, to continue to talk about the history and make sure the truth of what the patients went through never goes back into the shadows. This is the first set of photos of the grounds of Pennhurst. We had 5 hours of adventuring the campus so I have tonssss more photos I’ll share.
