I’m always looking for something that makes a portrait feel a little less obvious.

For this one, it was the window.

Reflections are funny because they can make an image feel layered and beautiful, or make it look like you completely missed the shot.

So I move around. A lot. A few inches can completely change what lands on the face, what disappears, and how much of the environment becomes part of the picture.

I’ve never been very interested in making everything perfectly clean. I like a little obstruction, a little accident, something that makes you stop for a second and look again.

That’s usually where the image starts to feel alive to me.

And sometimes the best thing you can do is stop fighting what’s in front of you and use it.

Patricia Velasquez was such a beautiful subject for this.

World Photography Day 📸

I picked up a camera long before I ever imagined it could become my life.

For the past 16 years, photography has been my profession, my livelihood, and the way I’ve moved through the world.

It took me around the globe.
Onto stages and into dressing rooms.
Through studios, deserts, arenas, quiet rooms and places I never imagined I’d see.

It introduced me to extraordinary people and put me in the middle of moments I could never have planned.

But more than anything, photography taught me how to see.

To notice what happens between the obvious moments.
The gesture before the pose.
The silence between songs.
The person behind the performance.

My relationship with photography has changed many times over the years, and lately, I feel it changing again.

Less about chasing the moment.
More about being present enough to recognize it.

These photographs are only a few fragments from that journey.

I don’t know exactly where the camera will take me next.

And I think that might be the most exciting part.

Though finding you
felt more like remembering.

A recognition without a memory.
A knowing without a beginning.

As if somewhere,
in some other version of forever,
I had loved you before.

And perhaps we have always done this,

found our way through different lives,
different skies,
different infinities,

only to recognize each other again.

And every time,
somehow,
we remember the way home.

To each other.

Some portraits stay with you long after the shutter is pressed.

This image became part of Presence, my body of work exhibited at Leica Gallery Los Angeles Leica Gallery Los Angeles earlier this year. It captures one of those rare moments that exist beyond the performance, where the artist simply exists in the present.

As the world feels increasingly divided, I find myself believing even more in the quiet power of art.

A photograph doesn’t ask where you’re from.
It doesn’t care what language you speak, what passport you carry, or what you believe.

It simply invites you to pause.
To feel.
To recognize a little of yourself in someone else’s story.

I’m deeply honored to share that Passport to Patriotism is now open to the public at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C. Art Museum of the Americas

Curated by the U.S. Department of State Office of Art in Embassies Art In Embassies and commissioned by the American Arts Conservancy The American Arts Conservancy , the exhibition explores themes of patriotism, diplomacy, and national identity through the work of artists from around the world.

As someone who grew up in Slovakia, I never imagined that one day my photographs would become part of a conversation about democracy, peace, justice, and cultural understanding halfway across the world. It’s a humbling reminder that art has the power to cross borders, transcend language, and connect hearts.

If these photographs create even one moment of empathy, curiosity, or connection, then they’ve already done what I hoped they would.

The exhibition is on view July 30 through October 18, 2026 at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C. If you’re in the area, I’d love for you to experience it.

On July 25th, we promised each other forever. ♾️

Surrounded by the majesty of nature and by the people who have loved us, shaped us, and walked beside us, it felt as though we all stepped through a portal together. Like dancing in a waking dream, it was as if time itself stood still.

Perhaps it did!

We weren’t aware of the full significance of the date until it was upon us. Known in ancient Mayan tradition and their 13 Moon calendar as the ‘Day Out of Time’, July 25th is regarded as a sacred portal between cycles. A moment to release the past, realign with what matters most, and to step into a new beginning charged with infinite potential.

Maybe that’s why it all felt so different.

It was as though we weren’t beginning something new, but remembering something ancient.

It was true magic, in the highest sense of the word.

Our hearts are still overflowing with boundless love, deep gratitude, and feeling of childlike wonder. We are still finding the words to express everything this extraordinary weekend meant to us. We may never find them, but only time will tell.

This is only the first glimpse.

We cannot wait to share more with you soon.

Funny how the Universe works ✨

One day you’re busy living your life. Collecting stories. Healing old versions of yourself. Chasing dreams. Wondering why certain things didn’t work out…

…and then, almost without warning, it quietly places your person right in front of you.

Not too early.
Not too late.
Exactly when your hearts are ready to recognize each other.

I used to think love was something you had to go looking for. Now I think it’s something you grow into. And when the timing is right, it somehow finds you too.

In just a few weeks, I get to marry my favorite human . My greatest adventure. My calm. My biggest laugh. The person who makes forever feel surprisingly easy.

It still catches me off guard sometimes. Out of billions of people, somehow we found each other.

So here’s your little reminder to trust the detours. Trust the waiting. Trust the chapters that don’t make sense yet. The Universe is usually writing a better story than the one we could ever write ourselves.

And as for me… I’m still trying to process the fact that in just a few weeks I’ll officially be Kat Katz. It kind of sounds like the name of a movie character… and somehow, it feels exactly right.

I can’t wait for this next chapter. 🤍✨
