This is the same chick I posted breaking out of the egg. This is the day after he? hatched. Mom is still on the nest, Dad showed up to feed the chick. The second chick is probably breaking out of the egg about now, he? was out and about later that day.

Common loons, Caledonia County, VT, June 9, 2026. Dad is banded, allowing me to tell them apart.

Four hours after the shot I posted yesterday with the chick just breaking the egg, I got my first good look at the chick. Mom took the chick down to the water and found a couple tidbits before they returned to the nest. This is the Weston loon family from my blog. Follow me to keep up with this and two other loon families.

The male of this pair is banded, allowing me to tell them apart - sometimes. Dad was out enjoying his last morning of peace for the season. He showed me his bands as I paddled past early in the morning. I'm well back, I was using an 800mm lens and this is heavily cropped. Common loons, Caledonia County, VT June 8, 2026.

Well before dawn last Monday, I found the Weston loon family's first chick was hatching. When Mom stood up, I could see that the chick had broken the end of the egg off and his head was free. It took him a couple more hours to fully emerge.

The name comes from my blog. To give the families I follow some privacy, I've given them nom de plumes. I know this is Mom as Dad is banded and he was out and about enjoying his last peaceful morning of the season. I was using an 800mm lens and this is heavily cropped. An early morning stretch from Mr. Middleton. The name is from my blog. To give the loon some privacy, I've given them nom de plumes, the Middletons live on the pond in the middle of the other two ponds I frequent. Mr. Middleton is banded, allowing me to tell them apart - sometimes.

The Middletons had to abandon their first nest this season. The water level on the pond dropped several inches after they started sitting. With the lower water, they can't get in and out of the brush around the nest underwater. They look like they're going to try again. They spent some time exploring possible nesting sites, going so far as to toss some vegetation around a likely spot. Mr. Middleton gave up on looking for real estate, gave a good stretch and headed off to find some breakfast. Common loon, Grafton County, NH June 10, 2026.

One of the Weston loon parents (the name is from my blog) took time to give me a nice stretch early this morning. Their second chick hatched today, hopefully will have pix soon. Common loon Caledonia County, VT June 9, 2026.

There was a thick of on the loons' pond this morning. I tried to make the best of it.
