An early morning stretch from Mr. Middleton. The name is from my blog. To give the loon some privacy, I've given them nom de plumes, the Middletons live on the pond in the middle of the other two ponds I frequent. Mr. Middleton is banded, allowing me to tell them apart - sometimes.
The Middletons had to abandon their first nest this season. The water level on the pond dropped several inches after they started sitting. With the lower water, they can't get in and out of the brush around the nest underwater. They look like they're going to try again. They spent some time exploring possible nesting sites, going so far as to toss some vegetation around a likely spot. Mr. Middleton gave up on looking for real estate, gave a good stretch and headed off to find some breakfast. Common loon, Grafton County, NH June 10, 2026.
