On this week's episode of backyard macro...

I've been getting some more practice in with my new lens and I'm absolutely thrilled with the results! It's quite fascinating to see what hangs out in your yard when you really starting looking around. The names are pulled from Google Lens, so there may be some issues but it's better than what I could come up with on my own.

From a technical standpoint, these are captured using a Sony a6400, TTartisan 100mm f/2.8 2x macro, Canon 430EX speedlite, and homemade flash diffuser. Most are shot at iso400, 1/200 sec, f/8, and 1/8-1/4 power flash.

Who doesn't like baby animals? I've been in pursuit of ducklings and goslings recently and have found them a little more challenging to find this spring/early summer. Maybe it's been the warmer winter months or possibly changing habitat. Either way, I did have success finding a number of Canada Goose goslings and also lots of ducklings over at the Lakeside Apartments in Kennewick off of Edison Street. It sounds like the apartment ponds will be removed in the future, so it's probably the best time to visit before they are no more.

I also made a visit or two out to McNary National Wildlife Refuge in Burbank, Washington to enjoy the Ruddy Ducks and others.

Over the last week I've been testing a new TTArtisan 100mm f/2.8 2x macro lens and experimenting with diffused flash to capture some small subjects in my backyard. So far I am pretty excited to see the results and am really looking forward to what else I can capture! If you're not a fan of spiders, I suggest you stop looking after the third photo.

If you missed it, the spring testing for the upcoming Tri Cities Water Follies took place on the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington on 5/30/26. Here's some of the photos I captured from the event.

The 5/28/26 "storm of the century" with golf ball-sized hail, 70 mph winds , and flood-inducing rains seemed to be only slightly exaggerated... However, there were some cool cloud formations and as it got darker, more cloud-to-ground lightning was happening. I started my evening just north of Rd 68 in Pasco, Washington and then moved west towards the Columbia River and enjoyed the show while it lasted.

Today (5/24/26) was the Pacific Northwest Mustang Club's 44th annual Spring Show & Shine at Columbia Park in Kennewick, Washington. There was a tremendous turnout with many generations of Ford Mustangs and lots of other interesting cars.

It's been fascinating to watch this little Great Horned Owl develop! The first photo was taken on April 10th and the last on May 22nd. Their nest was in a precarious location near a busy road and I was concerned that once the little one started leaving the nest, tragedy would unfold.

For a few weeks I was not seeing them around the nest. Yesterday I followed a hunch and checked out a nearby stand of trees and was happy to find them in a newer, safer spot. I hope they stick around so I can observe some more development.

Benton County, Washington.

Ruddy Ducks are small, compact ducks with stout, scoop-shaped bills, and long, stiff tails they often hold upward. They have slightly peaked heads and fairly short, thick necks. In the late spring/summer months, the males transition to having rich chestnut bodies with bright blue bills. During courtship, the males will strike their beak against their inflated neck, creating bubbles as air is forced out from their feathers. This display also involves a stiff tail held straight up and ends with a loud belch-like call. Apparently it drives the ladies wild!

I dropped in for a quick visit to McNary National Wildlife Refuge in Burbank, Washington this afternoon and had a wonderful time capturing this behavior firsthand.
