I’m excited to announce that my image Two Birds (Agra, India) has been selected in a wonderful, national-juried show that combines images with poetry around the theme of Harmony; after the images were selected, poems were written for the images. I have no idea what has been written about this piece, or who wrote it. Please join me at the reception this Friday the 13th at the Wickford Art Association. The poems will be read while viewing the art. Should be a great evening! Info in the comments section.

I am excited to announce that my image, Maiko, has been selected for a show at the venerable Salmagundi Club in NYC! Maiko is even featured on their web site announcement. Join me for the reception on July 26th from 6-9pm. The Salmagundi Club is a 150-year old gallery and this will be my first time showing in NYC since I won a prize at the Roosevelt Island Photography Club in 1988.

Vroom! (Mumbai) – This city is such a cool mix of the old and the new, the shiny and the decrepit. I was focused on taking an image of the large building across the street, which seemed like New Orleans collided with Hong Kong and India. A bus came by and I captured the movement as it zoomed through the frame. The silver car is stationary but the bus’s movement makes it look like it is in motion too. 2.5-second exposure with an ND filter.

Street Vendor (Mumbai) – While in India, I found that by and large, people were fine with me taking pictures with them in the frame. This street vendor stood pretty darn still for the 5+ second exposure as the traffic moved by on this hot, hot street.

Spice Shop (Mumbai) – I love to cook, so a stop at the spice market was in order. This was one of the larger shops. So. Many. Chilis! Many varieties. The awning flapping in the wind attracted my attention. The ‘smoke’ that you see in front of the shop is someone wearing a white top walking across the scene, their shirt reflecting in the mid-afternoon sun

Chaos at the Tenjin-san Flea Market (Kyoto) — This is a very busy photo. There is a little gem tucked into almost every bit of it (like The 3-Footed Man on the left and the dark, disembodied shoe in the lower right). Click to make it larger and explore. I found a spot at a corner of a path and explored a variety of long exposures...this one is 3.2 seconds...before a shop keeper shooed me off for being in the way.

Woman and Ricksha (Kyoto) — This woman and a friend were walking down the street and wanted to pose with the ricksha. I was already taking pictures of the scene. As I was taking pictures she turned and looked at me. 2.3-second exposure.

Temple, Mountain and Sky (Kurama Temple, Kyoto, Japan) – You have to want to get to this temple...a special train that goes into the mountains in the North of Kyoto, then a walk up the mountain (a bit) to a cable car, then another switchback-steep walk up to the temple. I loved the simplicity of this scene. That said, it was remarkably hard to get the image to look as it did in my mind’s eye.

Feets (Gion, Kyoto) — The Gion area of Kyoto is one of the best people-watching spots I know; old meets new, and everything is a little magical. Here is a cropped image and a more complete view. It is a 1.5-second exposure, with the headlights of an oncoming car lighting up the feet and creating a little swoosh off of one gentleman’s heels. Also check out how the sign of the restaurant shines through the tall guy’s shoulder.

Pagoda Angles (Kiyomizu Temple) – this is a 5-second exposure, which is why the sky looks a little funky, an there’s juuust a little detail in the underside of each of the levels. Kiyomizu is a magical place. Notice the pareildolia (something that looks like a person) in the lowest level of the pagoda — a face with an open mouth...

The Shape of a Shadow (Dainichido Temple, Kyoto) — It has been quite fun exploring long-exposure photographs taken during the day. Most show some kind of movement. This one, on such a bright, clear day, is different; everything becomes really deep and saturated and there is a richness to the shadow tones. I always post-process images, as RAW images tend to be flat. This one has no saturation or vibrancy adjustments at all; it is as if the beautiful day light soaked into the sensor.
