OUT NOW “Just Being Here” is available to watch through the link in my bio.

Walter’s wood-scrap tree stand is his second home. It is here that he sits almost every day of the year, rain or shine, even when it reaches temperatures in the negatives. This is where, as he says, he likes to “observe life, not just see” it.

“Just Being Here” is now available through the link in my bio.

Walter lives alone on a wooded property and hasn’t ventured more than a half-mile from his house, but his life is far from ordinary.

This story is delicate and asks for stillness to teach us about vulnerability, compassion, and sense of place. It touches upon difficult subjects (depression, anxiety and su***de) but ones that I hope we can all talk about more to break down the stigmas of mental health. Little did I know how much I’d change as a filmmaker and a person when I arrived at Walter’s property in October of 2020.

I’m happy this is finally out in the world, I’ll let Walter’s story speak for itself.

Thank you to my family and every friend, teacher, mentor and person who received a “can you please give me your feedback :)” email from me. I’m grateful for all the wonderful festivals that shared Walter’s story.

OUT NOW “Just Being Here” is available to watch through the link in my bio.

Walter’s ritual (or routine) of cutting up branches to feed to the beavers was something that intrigued me immediately. The first time I met him, he didn’t explain what he was doing — in silence, he began gathering and cutting branches and then made his way along a moss-laden path to the beaver pond. I felt it would make the perfect opening sequence.

Sounds as the village wakes up and an old man yells at his goats.

I was too scared to film the old man interacting with his goats up close and I regret that, it was a fantastic moment. I don’t speak greek very well and feared he would soon start shouting at me instead (the random guy walking around the village at 5:50 am with a camera). Maybe next time I’ll muster up the courage to risk getting yelled at by a goat herder.

If you want to quadruple your self doubt, try fly fishing for salmon. Waving the big wavy wand for fish is how hours pass out here. A lot of times, it’s in the rain, we don’t talk too much, we just wait. Sometimes a branch tumbling under the water finds our fly and we strip set and our heart starts pumping a million miles an hour because we think its a fish but it’s not. Sometimes it is a fish and you feel this overwhelming sense of relief — is it that you didn’t lose the fish and maintained the fabled “tough guy salmon bite-to-catch ratio” or simply a relief that comes as a reminder that these are the things that help you feel alive? Probably both.

Phyllo Dough Study Super 8mm // Phyllo dough is a very thin, unleavened dough used for making pastries and is notoriously hard to handle. Here, my Thea Politimi shows me how to make phyllo — its rhythmic rolling and graceful draping create an art form in and of itself.

This one is special. I like to tell place-based stories — ones that intimately explore people, environment and ways of life in conversation with each other. I strive to make films in a way that visually situates a place with in a specific story, to give the environment life beyond being just a pretty landscape. To me, place is temporal and personal, but also geographical and cultural.

I’m honored to be the recipient of the MiddFilmFest] Shouldice Family Prize for Best Vermont-made Film because Vermont’s physical landscape is crucial to telling Walter’s story. The way Walter interacts with the land and its inhabitants is humbling and I only hope to continue telling place-based stories that show people’s connections to their environment and hopefully spark that same feeling within others.

My film, “Just Being Here” will be screening in-person MiddFilmFest] in Middlebury, VT on August 28th at 2PM in Townhall Theater. I couldn’t be more excited to bring it back to where it started. See you there :)

JUST BEING HERE | OFFICIAL TRAILER

Walter lives alone on a wooded property and hasn't ventured more than a half-mile from his house, but this is where he seeks peace.

This story is delicate, immersive, and asks for stillness to teach us about vulnerability, friendship, and sense of place. Little did I know how much I’d change as a filmmaker and a person when I arrived at Walter’s property last October.

You can watch the full film on July 20th virtually at the Indy Shorts Film Festival — I’m still having a tough time comprehending how my little film made it into an Oscar-qualifying festival amongst hundreds of talented filmmakers, but here we are.

Thanks for all of your support, it means the world.
