My heart is heavy as I share that my beautiful grandmother passed away a few days ago, at the extraordinary age of 99. In this time of loss, I find myself feeling incredibly grateful for the many photos that capture her life. These images are more precious to me now than ever, and theyāve become a big part of why I am so passionate about photography.
I often talk about how photography allows us to leave behind a piece of ourselves for future generationsāhow one day, our great-grandchildren may look back at our photos with nostalgia and love. This thought has always been meaningful to me, but never more so than now. As I look at the photographs of my grandmother, I feel an even deeper connection to her. They help me know her better, to feel closer to her, and to hold on to her spirit in a way that words canāt quite capture.
She was an incredible womanāelegant, intelligent, artistic, and witty. She lived through World War II and experienced things most of us can only read about. Iām so thankful that someone was there to capture her essence in these photographs.
This is what photography is truly about: while our time here is short, our photos endure. They offer us a way to honor those weāve lost, to preserve their memory, and to share their stories with the generations that follow. My grandmotherās legacy will live on through the images of her, and I find so much comfort in that.
