26 years ago tonight: Gem at Beachland Ballroom & Tavern August 15 2000. Fabulous smart pop punk alt-rock band from Cleveland. it was led by Doug Gillard, one of the best guitarists I’ve ever seen live. He was an original member of Death of Samantha and would later play in Cobra Verde, Guided By Voices, Nada Surf and more. Gem’s music doesn’t appear to be available online other than Youtube videos. If you ever see their 1995 release “Hexed” grab it Douglas Gillard

40 years ago tonight: Beefeater at Stache’s Columbus Ohio August 13 1986. This band blew the roof off my head. Punk funk metal from D.C. Sooo good! Cowtown band Big Lie opened, with Painful Discharge (not pictured) playing the middle slot. Dischord Records

4 years ago last night: Gymshorts at Mahall’s Lakewood Ohio August 11 2022. Super fun band from Rhode Island. I didn’t really know about them but walked out with an album, a 7” and one of the coolest band shirts I own. Straight up fast paced punk rock with songs that are both unique & often hilarious subject matter. If they’re playing near you check them out! Show was upstairs in what Mahall’s calls their “apartment” GYMSHORTS Mahall’s 20 Lanes (there will be another post later tonight of a cool Dischord Records band)

25 years ago tonight: The White Stripes Beachland Ballroom & Tavern Cleveland Ohio August 10 2001. This was the 4th and final time they played the Beachland, the 2nd time in the larger Ballroom section. They were the very 1st band officially booked at the Beachland, playing the smaller Tavern, when the club opened the previous year. At this time their breakthrough album White Blood Cells was about to be released and the buzz about the band was definitely increasing. I ended up seeing them seven times and every show was outstanding The White Stripes FYI, that is Ben Swank of The Soledad Brothers manning the merch booth with Brian Olive of The Greenhornes telling him to charge me double for anything I buy

33 years ago tonight: Urge Overkill at Stache’s August 9 1993. UO’s album “Saturation” had just dropped and the single “Sister Havana” was getting a lot of air play. Sold out show and it was a lot like yesterday’s post about Big Black, people up front were not budging, so no pix of drummer Blackie this show 😞 This was maybe the fifth time I had seen them in Columbus, so all good. It was good to see this hard rockin’ band get some deserved recognition Urge Overkill

28 Years ago tonight: Rocket 455 at Pat’s in the Flats Cleveland Ohio August 8 1998. Rocket 455 was a bruising, hard rock band and one of the original bands that helped form the Detroit garage rock scene of the mid 90s / early 00s, which in turn spawned The White Stripes, Von Bondies, Gore Gore Girls and more. Members of Rocket would also help form bands such as The Paybacks, Detroit Cobras, The Numbers… They also recorded one of greatest Christmas songs of all time! 39 years ago tonight: Big Black at Southgate House Newport Ky (across the Ohio River from Cincinnati) August 7 1987. Steve Albini’s acerbic, post punk noise band playing their next to last concert before heading to Seattle. Arguably their best album, Songs About Fu***ng, was about to drop, with the “Happy Otter” side being just about a perfect set of songs. Steve on “guitar skinng”, Santiago Durango on “guitar grrr”, and David Riley on bass. The venue was packed and chaotic. I couldn’t get all the way to front as people refused to relinquish their spot. Most my photos were taken with me on my tip toes or even holding my camera above my head. I am/was 6’ 2” for perspective. This was a great show even with Steve telling long, dumb jokes between songs. They quit at their peak. More bands should do that The Southgate House Revival Touch and Go Records

40 years ago tonight: Volcano Suns at Stache’s Columbus Ohio August 4 1986. Formed by former Mission of Burma drummer Peter Prescott, here with Jon Williams/guitar & Jeff Weigand/bass, Volcano Suns were on tour for their All Night Lotus party album. definitely keeping bits of MoB’s raucous noisier elements, they were often compared to Hüsker Dü. I still pull out their debut album Bright Orange Years on a regular basis Peter Prescott
