Relinquish control. There, I said it. If professional photography isn’t something your kids do often then they’re probably out of their element. They could be excited, they could be overwhelmed. They could be scared. I know you want the perfect pictures but here’s the truth: it happens when you stop trying. Don’t mention looking at the camera. Let your kids cling to you, their little fingers won’t grip your clothes forever. Let them run, and hunt for seashells and make silly faces. You want to remember their personalities and interests at this moment in time. They won’t be the same years, even months from now. And you want them to enjoy this. Your session should not feel like a chore. For them or for you.

The major key to getting your kids to participate is letting them be themselves. We’ll give them jobs, (hey, find mom and dad a really pretty rock and come show them!”. We’ll play some games (play this little piggy with your baby sister!”) and I promise, by the end of your session, they’ll warm up so much we’ll get those sweet smiles you want, that winning “everyone’s actually looking!” photo and they’re more than likely gonna ask you to come back and see their new photographer friend again 🫶🏻
