I've been doing some thinking lately, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.
I recently received notice that the cost of products through my print lab is increasing again due to rising production costs. Unfortunately, that means the price of prints in my online store will have to increase as well.
To be completely transparent, prints have always been the lowest-profit item I offer. For example, one of my most popular prints sells for $8, but after production and shipping costs you pay $16 (which is more than my digital copies), I only make about $4. Meanwhile, my digital images allow me to keep more of what I earn while continuing to invest in better equipment, software, and the time it takes to photograph and edit your memories.
Because of that, I've been seriously considering moving toward a digital-only business in the future. It would help keep things simple, allow me to focus on creating the best images possible, and help keep my business sustainable without constantly raising prices.
That said, I know many of you still love having professional prints delivered right to your door, and I don't want to take away something that's important to my clients without hearing from you first. I am exploring other print options, but the cost will be the deciding factor.
My goal has always been to keep my photography as affordable as possible while still running a business that can continue serving all of you for years to come.
So I'd love to know... Would you be disappointed if I offered digital images only? Do you still order prints through my store, or do you prefer purchasing digitals and printing them yourself?
