Good morning everyone! Today’s post comes from a year ago, hope you all enjoy!
Reading & Northern 2102 kicked off the Spring Edition of ‘Iron Horse Rambles’ Season in style on home rails between Reading Outer Station and Jim Thorpe, PA this past weekend.
The first location I photographed the OSJT at was the start of the grade in Tuscarora Forest also known as State Game Lands 227. This is one of my favorite locations along the RBMN system, with the classy S Curve along with the trains struggling up the grade it makes for a nice semi-remote location to hear trains work.
After hiking out of the State Game Lands I was able to catch up to the train at Lake Hauto. A majority of the photographers take their place on the Lake Hauto Dam capturing the newly opened up scene, I decided to see what I could get if I parked a little to the west and hiked in along the shoreline. There was a bunch of tree stumps along the shore where I was able to capture a lower angle while still showing some of the lake under dramatic storm clouds.
The return trip was greeted with decent Spring weather and in some places was partly cloudy. We started at the RBMN Nesquehoning Campus along the wall of Route 54. With many cars ‘pacing’ the train along the route it can really bind up traffic making it a little difficult to get ahead of the crowd but I was able to snag two shots in decent sunlight in Nesquehoning before jumping ahead to Marian Ave in Hometown, PA.
After Hometown, it’s all downhill from there. I stopped in New Ringgold where the sun was peaking in and out of the clouds but it was still a decent angle as the train passed through town.
The final location was located in Berne at a farm crossing where the Iron Horse Ramble was in the final stretch to Reading, PA. It was great to capture this image of the train in lower light.
