If your photos feel flat, the issue may not be your camera

A lot of photographers think better photos come from adding more lights
Not always

Two continuous lights can be all you need

One light can shape or illuminate your background
The second becomes your storytelling tool

This is where things get interesting

Add a spotlight attachment and a few gobos, and suddenly you are not just lighting a subject, you are creating mood, texture, and intention

The pattern of light should work with the theme of the shoot, not against it

Great lighting is not about brightness
It is about depth

Depth creates separation
Separation creates dimension
And dimension helps the viewer feel something, not just see it

And yeah AI can be great
For bigger brands
For concepts
For campaigns
For testing ideas fast

But your personal headshot
That one should not feel generated

AI can give you something clean
But also something 10,000,000 other people could use

You’re not building a profile just to blend in
You’re building presence

2. What’s the value between AI and a photographer
AI gives you options fast
A photographer gives you intention

Direction
Energy
Timing
The small adjustments that change everything

Prices vary sure
But this isn’t only about quantity vs quality

It’s about having something that actually represents you
Not just fills a space on a profile

Because at the end of it all
Photography was never just about having a picture

It’s about capturing a moment that outlives us
A version of time that stays long after we’re gone

You can either stay on the bench and do nothing or practice every day, improve your skills, and be prepared when it’s time to act.

How many times do we not start shooting because we don’t have the right lens, the right camera, or because we think we lack talent?

What I’ve learned over many years of my career is that you bring your camera wherever you go. Shooting only one type of photography will give you just one perspective; shooting more than one opens your view to the universe.

Photography is about understanding what you are capturing. The questions you ask at a fashion shoot are not the same as those at a sports event, or when you get stuck on a train in NYC and are rescued by the fire department.

What tricks are they performing? What close-ups are remarkable on this jacket? What settings should I use at a marathon?

Just like Steve Nash told NBA or ESPN, “Soccer was my first love. I think it really helped my basketball — vision, creativity, spacing.”

There are angles, stories, and settings that will help you capture what you need when you need it, but only through practice.

Your style isn’t for everyone.

From years of experience, I’ve developed my own style. Can I explain it? Probably not. But my portfolio is full of experimentation.

What do I mean by that? That I’ve acquired a portfolio of techniques that open up a world of possibilities and allow me to adapt my style to whatever project might come in the future.

Natural lighting vs. strobes? Strobes vs. continuous lighting? Street vs. studio?

There are many ways to discover what your style might be. For me, it started with just the equipment I had available.

Whatever you decide to try, stick with it for a year and see if that’s the style that will define you as an artist.

Street photography is better than studio photography.

Not really!

It is important to define what type of work you want to do. For the passion of art, either way can be used. However, when working on the commercial side of things, it is important to have a mix of both. As brands rely a lot on studio shoots for their websites. I also consider the place I’m based in. In NYC, there are only about 6 months or less to shoot outside, which makes you ask, where am I supposed to shoot? Home? Most likely, you need a space to have all your equipment, backdrops, and more.

I believe it is a personal choice that falls down to one question: what part of photography makes your heart beat?

Lighting won’t book you the gigs you want
Knowing how to use light might

I’ve spent 10 years working with light in photography and architectural projects and before getting deep into strobes and a pile of modifiers I’d start with the basics

• CCT
• CRI
• Lumen output

Then get a feel for general illumination accent light and soft light what each one does to a space a face a mood

After that start understanding modifiers and how they shape light instead of just throwing more of it around

It’s not easy
Training your eye takes time

But the more technical knowledge you have the easier it becomes to use light when it matters

How do you break into photography?
Probably the question I get asked the most

Did you go to school for it?
Take courses?
Was someone in your family a photographer?

Not really!

I saved up, bought a point-and-shoot, and started shooting everything around me until I figured out what felt right

Started with architecture
Drifted into fashion
Somewhere in between, mixed both worlds together and followed whatever obsessed me next — which led me into skateboarding too.

People ask what gave me the skills.

Honestly? YouTube was my mentor for two years.

No gatekeeping — that was enough to start a career for me. Curiosity, repetition, making bad photos, making better ones.

Sometimes getting into photography is less about “breaking in” and more about starting before you feel ready.
