I keep coming back to the little ways Michala and Joe made their wedding day about more than just getting married. The day before, they tied their cord of three strands together.

During their ceremony, they placed their vows and a bottle of w**e into a box to open and enjoy on their first anniversary. There were family dances. Board games at the reception. A wedding painter creating something right in front of everyone. And eventually, the best ever, Penn State Creamery ice cream.

It was a wedding that made room for the things they loved. Their faith. Their families. Their friends. Their inside jokes. Their traditions. Their personalities.

And their very clear PSU allegiance. 💙🤍🐾

I think that's the difference between a wedding that is beautiful and a wedding that actually feels like your wedding.

You don't need to add more traditions just because they're traditions.

You don't need to make your day look like everyone else's.

You just need to leave room for the things that make the two of you, you.

There is a particular kind of magic that happens when a wedding has a lot of people who genuinely love the couple. The room feels louder. The hugs last longer. The dance floor fills faster. Someone is always laughing in the background. And there is always someone who knows the story behind the story.

Michala and Joe's wedding day felt like that. Full. Not just full of guests, but full of relationships.

Bridesmaids who knew Michala long before the dress. Groomsmen who could make Joe laugh when the nerves started creeping in. Parents who had watched these two become who they are. Friends who were completely invested in the celebration.

And by the time the reception started, it felt less like a formal event and more like one giant room full of people saying, "We're really happy you're here."

I think that's one of my favorite things about a big wedding. You don't have to choose between intimacy and having everyone you love there. Sometimes intimacy looks like 150 people who know exactly why you're worth celebrating. 🤍

Michala's wedding morning was full of making sure Joe knew he was loved. Notes left for him while he got ready. A mini golf course waiting for him in the groom suite because there wasn't time to actually go golfing that morning. Golf balls personalized with their wedding date. A love note etched into his watch.

Snacks and drinks ready for the guys because she knew they would need them. None of these things were particularly extravagant. But they all said the same thing:
"I know you. I thought about you. I wanted you to feel loved today."

And I think that's what made the whole day feel so intentional. Not because every detail was perfect, but because so many of the details were them. The best wedding details aren't always the ones that photograph the prettiest.

Sometimes they're the ones that make your person smile when nobody else is looking.

From an engagement session in Pennsylvania...

To a text that said their plans had changed... To cameras packed for Key West. To a beach ceremony. To celebrating the new Mr. + Mrs. Larka under the Florida sky. I think one of my favorite things about getting to photograph weddings is that I'm rarely just documenting one day.

I'm documenting a piece of a much bigger story. I get to see where a couple started. I get to hear about the plans that changed and the decisions that brought them somewhere unexpected. I get to watch the people who know them best celebrate the life they're choosing together.

And then, years from now, these photographs become a way back. Back to how it felt when you were surrounded by everyone you loved. Back to the laughter you didn't realize anyone captured.

Back to the person you were when you stood in front of each other and said, "This is my person. This is my future. This is who I'm choosing." Taylor + Alex, thank you for letting me be part of your story. It was a privilege to watch you become Mr. + Mrs. Larka. 🤍

After the vows, everyone headed back to Fort East Martello where the celebration really came alive.

Dinner with the people they loved. Stories being shared across the tables. Laughter that carried through the evening. And pretty quickly... a whole lot of dancing.

I love the transition that happens after a ceremony, when the nerves have settled. "We're getting married today" feeling becomes "we just got married." and suddenly we get to celebrate. Not a production nor a performance.

Just a group of people who love you, eating, laughing, dancing, and being fully present with you. Those reception photos are some of my favorites because they always remind me that the wedding isn't only about the couple. It's also about the community surrounding them as they begin something new.

And the Larkas were surrounded by a pretty incredible one. 🤍

A little reminder for the couples who are worried about everything going perfectly: Not everything always does, and sometimes it ends up more beautifully than you expect.

The ceremony still happens. You still exchange vows. Your people still gathered around you, and you choose to see the positives.

For Alex and Taylor's wedding an uber driver was complaining about the "Red tide" or the algae that washes up and makes the ocean smell concentrated. And somehow, the red-algae shoreline had its own kind of beauty. The warm colors along the beach almost looked like the beginning of a sunset.

The thing about weddings is:

You can plan carefully. You can create the perfect timeline. You can think through every detail. And then something unexpected can happen anyway. A lighthouse reception may be moved because of construction, but you find an equally beautiful space.

But the best days aren't ruined by every imperfect thing. Because the most important parts of your wedding day were never dependent on perfect weather, perfectly placed flowers, or everything going according to plan. You still get to marry your person.

And sometimes, the unexpected parts become part of the story you love most when you look back. 🤍 The moments you get to climb to the roof of a fort and watch the sun set.

There were no distractions from what this moment was about.

Just the ocean behind them. Their favorite people gathered close. A few memories of loved ones who should have been there. And Taylor + Alex making promises to each other. Their ceremony on Smathers Beach was simple. But simple doesn't mean insignificant.

Sometimes, when you take away the things you're doing because you feel like you're supposed to do them, you're left with the things that matter most.

The people you love. The person you're choosing. The promises you're making. I think that's why intimate weddings have such a special place in my heart.

There is room to breathe. Room to look around and actually feel the moment you're in, and to remember that at the center of all of it, you're getting married.

I love beautiful wedding details.

But I'll never stop believing that some of the best parts of a wedding morning are the things you can't put in a box. The stories being told while everyone gets ready. The friend who can't stop laughing.

The quiet moment when someone realizes, "Oh... it's actually happening." For Alex, the morning was full of his closest friends, plenty of laughter, and a whole lot of excitement for what was ahead.

But what stood out to me most was hearing these men genuinely celebrate marriage. Not just celebrate a wedding. Celebrate the commitment. Celebrate the woman Alex was about to marry. Celebrate the life they were choosing to build together.

That felt important. Because long after the dress is packed away and the flowers are gone, marriage is still there. And I think the best wedding days make space to celebrate that, too.

By the time Taylor and Alex's wedding day arrived, I didn't feel like I was showing up to photograph strangers.

I had spent their rehearsal dinner with their people.

I had been invited along for a sandbar adventure.

I had been welcomed into conversations and celebrations like I had known everyone much longer than I actually had.

And that feeling carried into the wedding day.

There is something so special about walking into a room—or onto a beach—and immediately being able to see how deeply two people are loved.

Not because everyone is perfectly posed.

Not because the day goes exactly according to schedule.

But because of the laughter. The stories. The way people show up. The way they celebrate two people choosing each other.

Those are the things I remember.

And honestly, they're the things I hope you remember most about your wedding day, too.

Some wedding stories begin with a plan.

Taylor and Alex's began with one... and then they changed it, in the best way!

When we first talked about their wedding, we were planning for a Pennsylvania barn wedding. Then somewhere along the way, they realized they wanted something different.

A little smaller.
A little warmer.
A little closer to the people they loved.

So they traded their original plans for an intimate wedding in Key West.

And honestly? I think there's something really beautiful about giving yourselves permission to change your minds.

Your wedding doesn't have to look like the plan you made when you first got engaged. It doesn't have to look like anyone else's wedding, either.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is stop asking, "What are we supposed to do?" and start asking, "What actually feels like us?"

For Taylor + Alex, that answer led them all the way to Key West. 🤍🌴
