Some photographs have a longer life than you expect.

I made this photograph of the 2007 Philadelphia Magazine Design Home nearly 20 years ago, and it remains in my portfolio today.

For about 15 years, I photographed the annual Design Home, producing roughly 100 images each year for Philadelphia Magazine's advertorial supplement. The projects were complex, the deadlines were real, and photography often began while the last details were still being finished.

On the final evening of this project, I was setting lights around the pool while workers finished the stonework, furniture arrived, and a growing crowd of the builder's friends and customers gathered to watch. It was the first time I remember photography becoming a spectator sport.

This exterior was quieter, but no less intentional. The viewpoint, the brief balance of dusk and interior light, and the landscaping in the foreground all work together to make the house feel inviting.

From this vantage point, an attractive new place began with an old building.

The Italianate Victorian home, built of locally quarried serpentine stone, has been part of Newark's Main Street for generations. As the community evolved, so did the building, first as offices and today as an integral part of Hyatt Place Newark.

The original structure now offers meeting spaces and distinctive guest suites overlooking Main Street, while the new hotel provides the amenities today's travelers expect.

Whether creating a place or creating a photograph, good outcomes are shaped by thoughtful decisions most people never see. Those quiet decisions help connect a building's past with its future, inviting us to experience both.

Good design considers everyone who lives in the home, even your dog!

This custom feeding station integrates a small but important part of daily life into the cabinetry, giving the family dog a place of their own.

And the photograph? I had a little fun with this one. The image was deliberately adjusted to imagine the place from the dog’s point of view. With dinner in sight, the world is alright.

Thoughtful design is often found in the smallest details. This one is sure to bring unbridled happiness to your furry family member.

Avalon has long been known as "Cooler by a Mile." During this week's historic heat wave, that old saying feels especially appropriate.

This major renovation embraces coastal living. Outdoor spaces were added to the second and third floors, the kitchen and primary suite were relocated to take advantage of views and ocean breezes, and even the compact backyard was transformed into an inviting retreat with a pool.
