Field Notes from the Camera Bag

Field Notes from the Camera Bag Field photography and short visual notes from wherever I happen to be standing. This page isn’t about polished content or constant performance. No scripts.

Field Notes from the Camera Bag is a long-running visual journal documenting ordinary places, machines, landscapes, and moments before they disappear. It’s about noticing—standing still long enough to record a combine passing a country road, water bubbling up through sand, a quiet corner of a town, or the way light falls across a working space. Sometimes the notes are photographs. Sometimes short

videos. Sometimes they’re just a few seconds of sound and movement. All work here is observational and field-based. No studio. Just the camera, the moment, and time moving forward. By Michael Kress.

🏠 Little Things Become Big Things (If You Let ’Em)

Spring’s a good time to take a fresh look around the house — loose handrails, sticking doors, cracked caulk, stuff like that.

They don’t seem urgent… until one day they are.

If you ever want a second set of eyes to walk through and catch those sneaky little problems before they get worse, that’s what I’m here for.

No pressure. Just solid advice, a helpful visit, and maybe even a fix or two while we’re at it.

🧯 Mike’s Home Fix Tip of the Week

Does your house number glow in the dark?

In an emergency, every second counts.
If your house numbers aren’t clearly visible at night from the road, you could be delaying first responders from finding you.

🔎 Check your numbers from the street after dark.
✨ Reflective or solar-lit numbers are an easy, inexpensive upgrade that could literally save a life.

Need help installing one? I’m your guy.

🛠️ Home Tip from Mike, Your HomeFix Guy 🛠️
Check your exterior dryer vent.

Clogged dryer vents are one of the most common causes of house fires—and this time of year, birds love to nest in them.

✅ Make sure the flap opens properly
✅ Clear out any lint buildup
✅ Check for nests or debris inside

It takes five minutes and could save you from a serious (and expensive) problem.`

🏡 Home Knowledge: Why Gutters Really Matter

Your gutters don’t just catch rain — they protect your foundation.

When gutters are clogged or missing, water spills over and collects around the base of your home. Over time, this can cause soil erosion, basement leaks, or even foundation cracking.

💡 Quick Fact: A single inch of rain on a 1,000 sq ft roof can generate over 600 gallons of runoff. That water needs to go somewhere — preferably away from your house.

Keeping gutters clean and downspouts pointed 4–6 feet from the foundation can save you thousands in repairs later and in the hoosier state it will help keep water out of your basement and crawlspace.

🐭 Have You Seen This Mouse In Your House?

They don’t knock.
They don’t ask.
They just slip through the tiniest cracks—like that gap around your pipe, or the trim near your crawlspace.

If you’ve heard mysterious scratching…
If your dog’s staring at the wall like it owes him money…
Or if you’ve found a chewed-up granola bar wrapper behind the couch…

👉 You might have a little guest.
