Eagles bring fresh, green leaves and pine sprigs to their nests during the breeding season primarily to repel pests, control the nest's microclimate, and signal to other predators that the nest is active and fiercely defended. The continuous addition of fresh greenery during incubation and the chick-rearing period serves several important purposes:

Pest and Insect Control: Fresh leaves (particularly from aromatic trees like pine or eucalyptus) contain natural chemical compounds. When these leaves dry, they emit volatile oils that act as organic insect repellents. This helps keep the nest hygienic and protects the fragile eaglets from biting insects, mites, and parasites.

Territorial Flagging: The bright, green branches are visible from the air. Wildlife experts believe eagles use fresh greenery almost like a "flag" to signal to rival raptors and predators that the nest is occupied, well-maintained, and heavily defended.

Temperature Control: Greenery acts as natural insulation. It helps break harsh wind currents, creates tiny pockets of shade on hot days, and helps maintain a stable, humid microenvironment within the nest bowl, which is crucial for eggs.

Sanitation: Adding fresh foliage covers up decaying prey and waste from previous days, creating a cleaner "bed sheet" environment for the young birds as they grow.
