I've had a camera since I was eight years old so my love and experience with photography is extensive. I moved to Winston-Salem in 1987 and in 1990, I started my own photography business. After 25 years of shooting weddings, families and corporate events, I am now primarily shooting landscape art for my own creative pleasure.

I pulled this one out of the trash from this morning. Originally didn’t like it because of the of the depth-of-field issue I mentioned with the image I captured 16 minutes earlier. As you can see, in this one I had the sloped ridge line of trees in focus and not the rocks that I was shooting between. The park’s Hanging Rock is just past those two rocks and this was the “Blue Moon” as it was setting just to the left of House Rock (where I was Thursday morning). 5:39 AM, 05.31.26

This morning, I hiked up to the Hanging Rock, skeptical, but since it only happens once in a Blue Moon, this was my best shot of it. While driving to Hanging Rock State Park, the moon was in clear sky much of the time but I knew the forecast suggested the clouds would be thicker as it was setting over Cook’s Wall. In fact, it completely disappeared before reaching the horizon when it would have officially set 30 minutes later when I was counting on having more light to work with (the sun was still below the horizon in the opposite direction). Knowing it could soon disappear, I started shooting while the night sky was still dark so to capture this image so it could be seen, I had to use a 30 second exposure and an aperture setting that shortened the depth of field - so only the foreground has sharp focus - not what I would have preferred. But, it’s a real photograph. 5:23 AM, 05.31.26

Looking east from House Rock, 5 minutes before sunrise this morning. Without some interesting fog around the Hanging Rock, I was at least hoping for some color in the sky and there was just that “some.” 6:01 AM, 05.28.26

I went out and captured some new images this morning. I wanted to get back up to Hanging Rock State Park and had been waiting for a chance of fog to make a sunrise more interesting. The best place in this Park to shoot the sunrise is from House Rock and last year in June, I lucked into the perfect foggy sunrise from this location and I wasn’t hoping to better those images but I seriously needed to get out to capture what I could. The forecasted “fog” this morning looked good for Winston-Salem but not so good at Hanging Rock. And the forecast was right! So, here’s that fog around Winston-Salem (to the south) this morning as captured from House Rock, 47 minutes before the sun would rise in the east. 5:40 AM, 05.28.26
