Lower Manhattan basks in the sun on Saturday, September 8, 2001, with the twin towers of the World Trade Center standing tall above the skyline. Taken from a film camera, photos were limited to the amount of film remaining and had to be budgeted accordingly throughout the day. I only took a few skyline photos that day, but three days later this view would change forever and photos like this would become historic.

"Erie on the Lackawanna"

Shortly after leaving Hoboken Terminal, train 1001 to Dover crosses Lower Hack drawbridge spanning the Hackensack River at Jersey City. Powering the train is NJ Transit heritage locomotive no. 4210, painted for the Erie Railroad. Lower Hack drawbridge was built in 1928 for the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Railroad and became part of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad in 1960. The skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan can be seen in the distance.

The New York City skyline glistened in the afternoon sun on Saturday, September 8, 2001. Taken from a Circle Line Cruise around lower Manhattan, the twin towers of the World Trade Center soared above the Hudson River as we cruised by. I would've taken more photos, but this was in the pre-digital age and film was used sparingly - I had to budget how many more photos I wanted to take the rest of the day. That habit would take years to break even after converting to digital. Little did anyone aboard that boat know that the skyline would change forever three days later.

Original print, 9/8/2001.

"The Old Neighborhood"

Painted in its "as-delivered" 1968 livery, NJ Transit GP40PH-2 no. 4109 cruises across the Shark River on the North Jersey Coast Line Built for the Jersey Central Railroad, this fleet of locomotives was once a common sight on the North Jersey Coast Line but now make very infrequent appearances. The old neighborhood has changed significantly since 1968, notably with the high-level bridge carrying Route 35 over the Shark River that replaced a single leaf bascule drawbridge in 2004.

"Morgan"

The quaint scene at Morgan is briefly disturbed by the roar of a diesel locomotive echoing down the Cheesequake Creek as the twice-weekly local freight crosses the river. A lone boater waits patiently for the bridge to open after the train crosses.
