The conference group toured the Rome Clocktower. I was underground on the other tour. So on my way out of town, I figured I'd just swing by and see it.

Nobody mentioned the hill. I don't know how I missed the hill. It's literally in the middle of town. When I say hill I mean I had to put my hybrid in sport mode and gun-it from across the street to get up said hill. Y'all... just to visit a water tower. I told you I was a history nerd, right? 🤓

I parked in the little deck I found wedged between two houses. I parked and walked to the edge, and got handed the entire Rome skyline at sunset. It was stunning!

Behind me, the Clocktower, built in 1871 used to hold 250,000 gallons of the city's water. It hasn't held a drop since the 1890s but the clock tower still stands as an epic landmark.

In the one photo you'll see the Historic Floyd County Courthouse, gutted by fire this past March, tower still standing. And of course I found a few steeples and epic sun flare over the downtown.

Then I did the most me thing possible: drove off to chase golden hour and got stuck on a phone call. *fart noise* I watched the best light of the day happen through a windshield, but I did grab a Coke sign shot out the passenger door while parked on speaker.

Made it back up to the clock tower at blue hour for one last frame, then drove an hour twenty home. Worth every minute.

Bucket list shoot No. 10, complete. Three pockets of free time, one small city, one very full memory card, and not one thing went how I planned it.

The best shoots are always the ones I didn't schedule. Where should I go next? 🪩

This part of the job never gets old. The friends who can't stop laughing mid-shoot, completely forgetting the camera is even there.

Studio sessions are my favorite for exactly this reason. You plan the shot list and the outfits, but the best moments are always the ones that happen in between. The inside joke. The "wait do that again" moment. The genuine, can't fake it laugh.

I walked into a church I had never been in before and immediately felt like I was back in college.

Part two of my Rome day. Lunch break. St. Mary's Catholic Church.

The original copy of my schedule did not allow for a lunch break so when I found I had two hours of downtime, I grabbed lunch at a local deli and then wandered to the very end of Broad Street to visit St. Mary’s.

Had I known I was going to have such a lovely break time, I would have reached out to the pastor, who used to be a parochial vicar at my parish, so we could visit. However, I also knew it was his day off and wanted to respect that.

The outside of the church looks perfectly placed for the town. Like many Catholic Churches in Georgia, I could tell it had seen many years of additions so I was excited to see what the nave and sanctuary had to offer. Inside, the cornerstone says the church was dedicated in 1930, but the altar piece stopped me in the doorway, because it looks so much like the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at the University of Dayton, which was built in the 1860s.

Turns out the high altar wasn't built for this church but it WAS built in the 1930s. . It was made in Italy in 1930 for a Jesuit chapel in Wisconsin, then salvaged and installed here during the 1998 renovation. Carrara marble, Venetian mosaic, onyx. Materials and detail work that is irreplicable today.

I loved exploring the century old baptismal font and was pleased to find the ambry in a prominent place with the oils visible.

I wish I had had more time to explore, and even more so, wish I had had time to visit the new parish chapel designed by the lovely Cristina DiMarzio from The Inspired Designs. Guess that means I need a return ticket to Rome.

The best part of catholic churches is you can be 50, 500, or 5,000 miles from home, in a town you've never been, and still know exactly where you are.

🤓⚠️ I am a history nerd, and downtown Rome, Georgia handed me an absolute buffet. Who knew this gem of a city was just over an hour away?

Soooo bucket list shoot No. 10 was supposed to be a road trip. It turned into a coffee run during a work trip. But since I make the rules here it counts.

I was in Georgia's Rome photographing a conference and ended up with three unplanned pockets of free time.

My day started at 5:45am so by 9:30 I was in need of more caffeine. I sprinted ⅓ of a mile during a lengthy keynote speaker, camera still strapped to my back, to grab an ice coffee.

This was my first moment *really* seeing Rome in the daylight and I knew instantly this precious town was about to cross off a bucket list shoot.

With one hand on the camera, and one hand on the coffee and no time to spare I had some serious limitations to what I could shoot: No zooming, no changing settings, no second chances. Whatever the street gave me is what I got.

The sun was just starting to peek over the 150+ year old buildings and Rome was showing off: Vintage cornices, Original metal work. Ghost signs. Historical markers. Brick walls with several patches. The high water line from the flood that convinced the city to raise Broad Street in 1886 rather than build a levee. (The old storefronts are still down there. There is an entire underground level of Rome!!)

Constraints are underrated, by the way. When you can't fiddle with your settings, you have to actually work to compose the shot. My 20 minute sprint turned into a 3 century time warp and epic photo walk. I’m not sad.

PS: This place is a photo location goldmine: A family lifestyle session. Brand photos for a museum curator, a tour guide, a travel agent, a historian, a book lover, a municipal employee, a cosplayer, or anyone who wants a vintage backdrop without fighting a crowd for it.

So many small businesses are leaning on AI generated images, flyers, and marketing materials. I get it, its cheap and fast, but is that how you want to represent your brand. I specifically want to pose this questions to the churches around Atlanta; should you be using AI flyers to share events and updates to your parishioners? I personally feel like your audience wants to connect with real people and real brands.

I work with small business owners and Catholic churches across Atlanta and Roswell on exactly this, real brand photos that actually sound and feel like you and work as hard as you do online. Guided posing, zero awkward energy, photos you're actually excited to post.

If your business (or church!) doesn't have a real photo bank yet, that's an easy gap to close. 2026 is your year!!

Senior season hits different when you actually love the pictures. We chased a few favorite spots for this one, some greenery, a big open rooftop for golden hour, even a shoe detail because the right pair deserves its own moment.
