Aradana Gala: The rock of invitation

It is where the Arhat Mahinda landed.

Aradanagala is a boulder on the summit of Mihintale mountain. This is from where Arhat Mahinda addressed king Devanampiyatissa for the first time. King was hunting deer below the rock in the mango forest on the mountain plateau. Arhat Mahinda, the missionary and son of Emperor Ashoka of India, came to Mihintale to officially inaugurate Buddhism in the country in 263 B.C.

The historical meeting of Monk Mahinda and the king 2,329 years back is commemorated annually in June on a full moon day by Buddhists across the country with Mihintale being the focal point. They make an annual pilgrimage to Mihintale summit and other historical locations in the surrounding. Arhat thero arrived with six other disciples from India but didn’t reveal them to the king thinking the king would get scared. Later the other companions were revealed and the king was invited to come closer without fearing them. Hence, it is known as "Aradana Gala" in sinhala and "Invitation rock" in English. Another name is "Sila Gala" meaning "virtue rock." King Devanampiyatissa became a Buddhist after his conversations with Arhat Mahinda on that day.

Lord Buddha had visited Mihintale on his third visit to the country which was then called Missaka Pabbatha. It is 1000 feet in elevation. Total steps up to top of Mihintale plateau is 1840. From there you need to take some more steps carved in to the Aradana rock and some small boulders to get to the top of the largest boulder on which Arhat Thero arrived. There is an Iron railing to support pilgrims to climb and an iron fence on top of the rock for support as it is very windy up there. Once you climb up to the top of Aradana Gala you get a 360 degree view of Mihintale and surrounding country side as far as the eye could see. Even during very windy weather pilgrims never fail to visit top of this rock.

Abyss Pool is a hot spring in the West Thumb Geyser Basin of the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, United States.

The colour of the water is turquoise blue and it is so clear that you can almost see through the water but you can't see the bottom. Hence the name Abyss pool.
It is 53 feet deep and is the largest hot spring pool in Yellowstone Lake at West Thumb. Although it is a dormant now it has been an active geyser in the past. Last time it irrupted was in 1992 with plums of water reaching 30 -80 feet in the air.

World Sea Turtle Day is celebrated on June 16th.

This is to highlight the importance of sea turtles in the marine biodiversity and saving the turtles from near extinction. The International Union for the conservation of nature (IUCN) has considered it as endangered species. This day coincide with the birth day of Dr.Archie Carr, the father of sea turtle biology.

Turtles have been in existence on planet earth for more than 100 million years . One of the few species that have survived since pre historic time period, even before the time of Dinosaurs. Turtles have a life span of above 100 years and meant to live longer than humans.

Only 1 out of 1000 sea turtle eggs survive to adulthood giving a very low chance of survival. Out of the seven species of sea turtles, six of are considered under extinction. The seven species of sea turtle are Loggerhead, Green, Leatherback, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, Kemp’s Ridley, and Flatback. Out of these seven, two species, Hawksbill and Kemps Ridley are considered critically endangered. Five species of tutles are observed in the coastal belt of Sri Lanka for nesting .

Plastic pollution in the ocean is the biggest threat for the survival of the turtles as they mistake plastic in the ocean for jelly fish.

When sea turtles are almost near extinct, the destruction brough by the chemical fire in X-Press Pearl cargo ship off Colombo port is a double blow to the population of turtles that choose Sri Lankan coast as their habitat. With todays count, over 60 turtle carcasses have washed ashore and many more could have died, disappearing to the bottom of the sea. Although it is apparent the deaths of sea turtles are related to the X-Press Pearl ship catastrophe, the cause of death for the turtles are yet to be confirmed by the relevant authorities.

We can only hope for the best that the remaining few turtles will be able to generate offsprings to carry forward there generation to the next millennium.

The world environment day is initiated by the United nation to create awareness about the significance of nature to the public to protect the environment. The day was established in 1972 at the first Human environment conference in Stockholm and observed on June 5th every year. This years the theme is Ecosystem Restoration : Reimagine. Recreate. Restore.

It is very applicable to Sri Lanka given the current situation with the e-press pearl ship disaster off Colombo harbour . We will have to Reimagine. Recreate and Restore our ocean, beaches and marine life.

With the environment day this year UN is launching "A Decade of Eco System Restoration" project to heal our planet by reviving damaged ecosystems. We can grow trees and change our life style to restore our environment to protect the rivers ,ocean and forest for future generations.
