What is it about a brown bear face?

Add a little rain, those first colors of fall, and that look straight into the camera…

I came to watch the sun go down. Instead, I watched it climb the mountains, as so many who come to Yosemite have done before.

I arrived at Valley View in Yosemite National Park with the evening sun still reaching into the valley. As I watched, the light began its own climb up the mountains until only the last warmth remained on the granite.

Dust, dominance, and a whole lot of attitude.

One last look at the bison rut in Yellowstone.

What fascinated me most wasn’t any single confrontation. It was everything happening at once, bulls testing one another, dust rising from the wallows, calves tucked among the herd, and that low rumble you feel almost as much as hear.

It’s one of those experiences a photograph can only tell part of.

I shared more from this return to Yellowstone (and the road through Big Sky that brought me there) in my latest Travel Journal. https://www.dawnholmphotography.com/photo-journals/albums/big-sky-yellowstone-mt-08-2026

Sometimes removing the color changes what I see.

In color, this feels like a morning in Yellowstone. Sagebrush, dust and that warm early light.

In black and white, I find myself seeing something different. Shape, distance, dust and the almost timeless presence of the bison.

Same moment. Same photograph. A different story.

Which one holds you longer: color or black & white?

A quiet Sunday feels like a good time to linger a little longer.

Before summer begins to give way to fall, I’ve been returning to some of the quieter details from Koyasan.

Weathered wood. Intricate joinery. Repetition and rhythm. Stone softened by time. Small signs of devotion tucked among it all.

The longer I stayed, the more there was to see.

Sometimes the photograph isn’t in the grand view. It’s in the details you notice when you slow down.

Look closer. There’s always more to see.

It’s World Photography Day 📷

World Photography Day seems like a good day to remember why I picked up a camera in the first place.

There are photographs I make because I’m searching for a story, and others that happen in a fraction of a second.

A shake of the head. Water catching the light. A moment I couldn’t possibly see quite this way without a camera.

Photography has taught me to slow down, pay attention and sometimes simply marvel at what was there.

Still looking. Still learning. And still pretty amazed by it all.
