Remember when I said I loved it when my husband calls and tells me to get my camera and go outside?

I might need to be more specific because the universe was like “Well now, ibis are great. But let’s spice it up a bit.”

I love it when my husband calls me at unexpected times and says, “You’ll never believe what I just saw.”

A few months ago, it was a mountain lion crossing US 85. A few weeks ago, it was these guys: White-faced ibis.

They’re a new bird on my life list. I’d never seen them in the wild before and never expected to find them poking around in the ditch outside our Goshen County home.

You can't see it in this photo, but they're named for the white facial band that starts at their bill and wraps around their eye.

White-faced ibis feel a little...tropical? Exotic? Like they should be hanging out in some swamp narrated by David Attenborough instead of standing in a sticky Wyoming irrigation ditch beside a bucket somebody threw out a truck window and an old Coke can.

Apparently they’re becoming more common across the West, especially around wetlands, flooded fields, marshes, and agricultural areas. Adult birds get that gorgeous burgundy-and-iridescent-green coloring during breeding season, and up close they look almost metallic in the sunlight. Their curved bills are made for probing mud and shallow water for insects, crustaceans, frogs, and whatever else is unfortunate enough to be squishy and nearby.

I watched them drill in the ditch for about 10 minutes. The two groups called back and forth to each other and it sounded like they were laughing.

But the coolest thing was when they took flight. There were about 50 of them and they looked positively prehistoric as they took off and flew north. Like little pterodactyl interns on the wing.

Good ol' Goshen County still has a few surprises up her sleeve for me, even a decade later.

I tore my rotator cuff back in November. It's forced me to rethink how I work, how long I work, how often I have sessions in a week, and even what gear I take.

A lot of folks have told me (doctors included) "just listen to your body. You'll know when you're overdoing it."

Um...did you just meet me?

Overdoing it is my default setting. Overdoing it is HOW I got here in the first place. Overdoing is also part of the ADHD.

So, no I will not be listening to my body. It's given me terrible life advice thus far.

🐾 MODEL CALL: PETS 🐾

Bring me the good boys!!!

I’ve been kicking around the idea of offering simple studio pet sessions because photographing animals is basically sports photography mixed with toddler management and occasional velociraptor energy and I figure...why not?

So I’m looking for a few photogenic good boys, good girls, and morally questionable orange cats to help me test lighting, setups, and workflow.

Here’s the deal:

• Short studio session (about 15 minutes)
• Dogs, cats, or other reasonably handleable pets welcome
• Well-socialized pets only please — they should be comfortable around people and able to safely handle a new environment
• Pets must remain leashed unless directed otherwise
• In exchange for allowing me to use the images for marketing/social media, you’ll receive 3 digital images of your choice

This is NOT about perfectly trained show dogs. Your lab can still have two brain cells fighting for third place. That’s fine. But full speed constant zoomies in my studio is a no-no.

But I do need pets that can safely exist in society without attempting homicide.

If you’d like to apply, email me at [email protected] with:
• Your name
• Pet’s name/breed/age
• A quick note about their personality
• A snapshot of them

I’ll choose a handful of pets that fit the vibe I’m going for.

Kid: Mom...why is she taking pictures of the grass?

Me: I'm not taking pictures of the grass. I'm just checking my lights.

Kid (to mom): I think she's embarrassed I caught her taking more pictures of the grass.
