Watson the dog spent his last night on Earth in the arms of a woman who loved him. Watson was brought to the vet after being found alone in a park in Philadelphia. He was emaciated, covered in infected wounds, and had a large cancerous tumor on his back leg. When Janine Guido, founder of Speranza Animal Rescue, first met Watson, his expression said it all. “The first thing I noticed about him were his eyes,” Janine said. “He looked defeated, like he was ready to give up the fight.” The cancer had unfortunately taken over Watson’s body. By the time he was transferred to the rescue, it was clear that all Watson wanted was someone to sit with him. The only thing they could do for him at this point was try to make him comfortable, so that’s what Janine did. “I had a feeling things weren’t going to be good the next day,” she said. “I didn’t want to leave him alone. Not when he needed me most.” So that night, Janine made a bed out of a bunch of blankets and pillows and put it in the laundry room of the rescue center. She got in bed with Watson, held him close, and talked to him softly. The dying dog fell asleep, and Janine stayed with him all night long. “He slept like a rock the whole night, snuggled up so tight to me,” Janine said. “I fell asleep crying and woke up crying too.” For the first time in who knows how long, Watson got to sleep comfortably in the arms of someone who loved him. But when Janine woke up the next morning, the dog was even more tired than the day before. He wouldn’t eat or drink, and he started to circle around, passing away shortly after. Even though Janine didn’t know Watson for very long, the impact he had on her that night is one she’ll never forget. And surely after the life Watson had led, Janine’s kind gesture meant the world to him too. “I’m so grateful I got to hold him for his last night,” Janine said. “I kept telling him how loved he was — and that his life mattered. My heart is broken, but I wouldn’t change a thing.” Rest in peace, Watson.
