Here’s to Cabin Fever - One of my favourite shots to capture the dark and melancholic mood felt around the winter solstice - together with a series of images from Hornstrandir in the wintertime. While the days quickly start getting longer, there’s a few days around the holidays where it remains largely unchanged, around 2.5 hrs of daylight. The amount of light actually varies quite a bit by region in Iceland, with the longest daylight in the South. Hornstrandir is the most remote corner of Iceland, only accessible by boat from Isafjörður, and it’s often a rough ride, even in mild winter weather.
I’ve been there a few times over the years to photograph the arctic foxes in the wintertime in their natural habitat. But besides photographing the foxes, I love capturing the whole feeling of this adventure. The Lonely Cabin is the only house in the entire fjord, and is called the Kvíar Lodge, named after the fjord it’s located in. No phone signal, no connection to the grid whatsoever - a real embrace of the wilderness.
While brighter days are ahead, I enjoy reminiscing on these dark and moody days. Before you know it, light will be abundant again.
