Shooting Pohono Fall has always been challenging for me. It’s so hard to focus on the falls, with so many other amazing features around it. The light is also tricky, particularly in the winter. But this night the clouds lifted and let just enough color though. Definitely one of the moments from this past year that I won’t forget.

It’s been just over a week since I left Yosemite, but it’s been a total whirlwind. A new house, a new job, and a whole lot of new climbing gear. So I haven’t had much time to shoot. I haven’t even had much time to go through past photos. But I did have a minute to scroll through memory lane, and found this shot. This was from October, when I was working/living out of my van in the Valley. I could put in a full day of work, and then wander around the Valley to shoot at sunset. Getting to watch the leaves change was magical, since I’ve missed this over the last handful of years. I’m excited about this next step, but already missing Yosemite.

A thick fog filled the Valley the morning that I drove out of it. The sky above the fog was clear and blue. The sun reflecting off of the cliffs cut through the fog, and gave me some spectacular last views of this beautiful hole in the ground. I spent 20 minutes enjoying it and then had to hit the road to Bend. @ Yosemite National Park

My last week living in Yosemite Valley was a rainy one. Several inches of rain fell and hit sky was regularly a featureless sheet of grey. This kept me from producing as much as I would’ve liked. But determined, Jen and I did go out a couple times. This day teased me with occasions cloud breaks throughout the day, but as sunset came, so did the sheet of grey. None the less, it was a great final evening spent in Cook’s Meadow.

I have just three days left of living in Yosemite Valley. It’s going to be super hard to think about not waking up to this view off my back porch everyday. But I’m so stoked for the time that I’ve had.

Since I picked up the D850, I’ve been enjoying playing with night photography more. The camera handles cranking up the ISO significantly better than any camera that I’ve owned before. I definitely still have a lot to learn in order to produce a higher quality final image though. What are your tips or tricks for night photography?

Last night’s shoot was a bust. So here’s a shot from when winter was just starting to creep into the Valley. Now there’s been snow on the Valley floor for weeks and even as it warms a bit, winter seems to not be releasing its grip just yet.

The absolute highlight of living in Yosemite Valley has been watching Sentinel Rock emerge from the dark every morning, while enjoying my coffee.
This morning I watched the clouds clear from the mountain. I grabbed my camera, ran out into the snow, and managed to capture this scene.

The best part about waiting for Horsetaill Falls to light up, is watching the sunset over the Cathedral Rocks. Such an underrated feature of Yosemite Valley.
