There's no right or wrong guest count at your wedding, but how much time you'll actually get to spend with your guests is worth taking into consideration.

I've seen so many couples run around constantly trying to make sure they at least say hello to each guest, and then feel like they hardly got to talk with anyone. Weddings are already busy and generally pretty tight on time, so a large guest count doesn't leave much time to talk with each person.

Now, this isn't talking anyone out of a big wedding. I mean, when else is it possible to get all of those people together in the same room, let alone to celebrate you? I'm just pointing this out because if an intimate setting with real connection and conversation is high on your priority list, a little rough math goes a long way.

I’ve heard of photographers creating a ā€œwedding photo checklist,ā€ and I’ve even seen some selling said checklist to others. But I bet on the photo checklist there isn’t anything that says ā€œwalking across random parking lotā€ sooooo….

There’s no deciding what is going to make for a great photo beforehand. There’s just real-time observation, being present, and being ready to capture a moment at all times.

Photos like these really captured my interest more than anything else for a good chunk of my photography journey. There was something about being able to create something unreal in camera that struck me.

I almost stopped entirely for a couple years to focus more on simplicity.

The wedding industry has a way of convincing you that one style of photography is best. One style is the most meaningful. One style is worth paying for. And I fell for it.

I drifted away from what set me apart because I thought no one cared. I had always focused on real moments 90% of the time, but then I just threw away the 10% that excited and challenged me.

But I’ve learned a lot over the past couple years and I’ve learned that what I care about also matters. During a single session, shots can be simple and focused on a real moment, and they can be weird, funky, and different. Real and creative don’t have to cancel each other out. It’s all about evolving and blending different techniques and styles to fit the story you’re telling.

Family trip to Monster Jam last weekend šŸŽ‡

When all those trucks circle the field during the opening ceremony: I’ve never heard noise that loud. Benji isn’t the only one that needed headphones haha!

Also, where do I sign up to drive one of those trucks??

You can use AI to put yourself on any background you want, but it’ll never replace touching the dirt, breathing the air, and actually being present with someone you love. It’ll never be real.

It’s never been about the photos. It’s about celebrating, experiencing life, and creating a memory.

I’ve mostly done ā€˜all day’ coverage since I started photographing weddings in late 2017.
I didn’t offer shorter days because people wouldn’t ’care’ about getting ready photos, and they wouldn’t be the first to get cut.

Look, I hate the idea of fake getting ready photos, and the dress hanging on a tree or something. But this is an opportunity to warm up creatively, capture some real moments, and most importantly get you comfortable with the camera. During getting ready photos, I get to interact with everyone and build trust, and then when the day really gets going, I’m just an extension of the wedding party and the images I’m able to get later on reflect that.

Don’t skip getting ready photos.

A few frames from Lauren and Jared's wedding that make me smile.

I've been really bad at posting on Instagram. Wedding photography is in this weird phase where you have to make videos and blog posts about everything wedding related in the name of 'marketing', and it has left a sour taste in my mouth. What I can say at this moment is that I'm so grateful for each and every couple who has trusted me to photograph your wedding day.

As I grow as a photographer, I've come to realize that all of my favorite photos are random. I like the epic photos, I like the super 'cinematic' stuff, but when it comes down to it, it's the funky stuff that makes me smile. All the images that take time to realize how much you love them.

Are they the photos that make the wall? Maybe not. Are they 'portfolio' worthy? I don't even know what that means anymore, but regardless, these random candids and funny moments are what connect me back to you as my clients and friends and the laughs and moments we shared.
