Though admittedly nothing too unique, this simple home from the early 1900s is a beautiful example of a common style of homes found everywhere in Northeast Ohio. This house is located on Court Street in Canfield, Ohio.

The Home Savings & Loan Building in Youngstown is arguably the most iconic part of the city’s skyline. However, the building will soon change as the iconic “Home Savings” signs will be replaced with “Premier Bank” soon. The skyscraper, which was designed by Charles Owsley, was built in 1919 and is 12 stories tall. For 101 years, the building has been the headquarters of Home Savings & Loan, but will now be home to Premier Bank, which has merged with Home Savings. The building remains fairly original, but received renovations in the 1950s, namely the glazed brick exterior over top of the original yellow brick.

Happy Easter!! To celebrate, here’s some pictures from Charleston that I never posted before! I’ll be posting more in the next few days as well. Also, thank you guys so much for 1500 followers (on Instagram)! I hope you are all staying safe and ‘social distancing’ - I look forward to getting some more pictures in different cities once this is all over! This picture is from Queen Street in the French Quarter.

I absolutely love these riverfront rowhouses in Wellsburg, WV! Notice that you can see the river on the far right edge of this photo behind the garages.

Here’s another beautiful home on North Heights Avenue. This house is actually for sale ($45,000) and can be found on Realtor.com (236 North Heights Avenue, Youngstown, OH).

This is St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Downtown Youngstown. Built in 1900, this church once served as a center of Youngstown’s Slovak community. Sadly, it is now one of many churches in the City of Youngstown with deep ethnic/cultural roots that will be closed soon. @ Youngstown, Ohio

This beautiful house is on North Heights Ave. in Youngstown’s North Side. This street is a mixture of well cared for homes and ones that are in urgent need of repair. Luckily, it appears there are some renovation projects happening on the street. This house is definitely one of, if not the most kept up one on the street.

The A. Smith Building in Wellsburg, WV is by far my favorite building in town. This spectacuarly preserved Victorian commercial building is home to Traubert’s, a longstanding independent pharmacy which opened in 1949.

This beautiful home is on La Clede Street in Youngstown’s Uptown area. It’s definitely one of the more ornate homes in the area and a relic of the wealth that once existed in parts of the South Side.

The Uptown Theater, once known as “Youngstown’s Luxury Theater” sits prominently on Market Street in the center of the once bustling Uptown District. Uptown was a popular retail, dining, and nightlife area for several decades. It’s storied past includes rock concerts at Mickey’s Bar (such as The Raspberries & The Human Beinz), fine dining at Cicero’s and The Colonial House, new movies at the Uptown Theater, and even the famous “Youngstown Tuneup” mob hit in which a car bomb killed a Cleveland mob boss and caused damage to buildings even several blocks away. After all these years of neglect, the Uptown Theater is finally beginning to be restored! For the first time in 50+ years, the original 1920s facade of the Uptown is now visible. However, the marquee is damaged beyond repair and will likely be removed. Likewise, the original iconic neon signs will not be placed back on the building. As sad as it is to see those original design features go, it is amazing to see progress finally coming to the theater, and I hope it can succesfully open once again some day. The second picture shows the theater in the 1990s when Easy Street Productions briefly brought it back to life - the theater looked like that until last week when the original facade was re-exposed. I may write a blog post on this theater, or Uptown’s history, so if you are interested in that, please let me know!

I love this beautiful town hall building in Wellsburg, WV! It’s located along a brick predestrian mall that connects the business district with the riverfront. Sadly, like the rest of the city, the storefronts on this pedestrian street are all empty.
