LIFE

On this day somewhere in northern Montana my mind drifts to how my life absorbed riding RTW, like it was what i’m supposed to do.

I originally left for a 4-6 month ride on March 20, 2011. That was it, that was the plan! It’s now 5594 days later and i’m still riding.

Sure i stopped for a while here and there, lack of money, COVID, normal life situations needed dealing with, but somehow, at a guess, i’d say i’ve been out here for at least 4500 days, riding somewhere, on some pavement, some dirt, some crazy trail, some country, some sunset.

…and i love it and i’m keeping going, the new T7 is finished and ready to go. This was part of the last ride for the old T7.

New countries lay ahead, new challenges, new roads, new borders and most importantly new experiences.

Thoughts for the Dempster, and other areas up around the Arctic Circle.

A windshield that creates wind flow over your visor/ goggles is great, or eat bugs 🦟 for days.

Have a good weather app, if the weathers good, ride, if not hunker down if possible

Clean your bike and do an oil change, air filter cleaning, that calcium chloride gets everywhere

know where ‘stuff is’ km by km, and have a 400km + range from you fuel tank/s

when theres animals signs it means there WILL be animals, and some will not be friendly, be prepared and know how to react.

Oh yeah, bear spray!

You want to add anything?

Wear that Dempster dirt like a badge of honor, plus it’s real difficult to remove 😎

Ushuaia and the Antarctic, is over that horizon, sure a LONG way south, and the Arctic is in the mirrors. (…and my buddy Trey 😜)

It’s been quite the ride reaching them both, and I’m not even close to being done, more continents to come!

Rode back to Inuvik under a blue sky, stayed for the night…and woke up to rain being forecast, well s**t!

A place i’ve always wanted to go simply because you CAN ride right to the Arctic. Prudhoe Bay on the Dalton steals that from you. On the Dempster you get right to it.

Tuktoyaktuk had about six months of -76°f/ -60°c weather over the winter so the Article Ocean not surprisingly is still frozen over, so no swimming but you can walk on it 😎

Leaving Inuvik it was clear blue skies the whole way to the top and amazingly 75°f/ 24°c, couldn’t have been better weather if it were planned.

Past the Arctic Circle, into the Northwest Territories for the first time, a hint i’ve gone more than half way north to the arctic on the Dempster, fill up with some very expensive gas, getting closer and the tundra begins…

Fast dirt to Eagle Plains, but 90km from there the intermittent sand begins, random patches, some deep, some not, it continues for 70km. This is the section a few riders get caught out in!

Not many have made it up to Tuk yet, but already we heard there’s been a flight for life, one rider went down and needed a helicopter rescue!
