Each one was a son or daughter, a father or mother, a brother or sister.

They served our country selflessly and never made it home.

It’s Memorial Day, the day we honor them for their love of country, for their courage and for the ultimate sacrifice they made to protect our freedoms. For their bravery and for giving it all.

Let us not forget, and take pause today to remember them with gratitude.

"Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them." -Franklin D. Roosevelt

Psst, did you hear something? These two prairie dogs were checking out the situation in super cute mode. They are obviously pals and were hanging out together while I took these photos from about 30 feet away. After about three minutes, they decided to not take any chances on the two legged creature nearby, and disappeared into their burrow.

This sweet mule deer was enjoying a meal of Rocky Mountain bee plant flowers when I spotted her. I watched as she moseyed across the meadow, munching as she went. She was aware of me but ignoring me at first, then after I did not go away, finally decided to fully check me out. Here is the resulting image of her looking at me as if she is saying “can I help you?” 😄

I’m not a big fan of winter photography when it involves snow and being cold, which is pretty much the whole winter 😄. But on the occasions when I do venture out to get some shots, I am always glad I braved the cold. This cute little amazingly found some green leaves in the snow and posed with his prize for a brief moment. I am always grateful when I get a shot of a bird before it flies away, so this was a small victory!

I just loved this little guy in the pond by the meadow, his head up to see if finally I had gone away 😄. No such luck! I’m not a turtle expert but he seems to be a northern but could also be a painted or something else altogether. It’s really difficult to tell without full body photos and he would not let me get close enough for those!

Parallel worlds exist right in front of us. Within them, lives are lived in the light and in the dark and places in between. Near my favorite meadow is a large pond and there I find many creatures to photograph. Later on, when revisiting that day’s captures I often find photos that appear . Or are they? These were just a stone’s throw from me, in the , but look closely. Is that the moon and is that a drop of precious amber dripping down, luring the second to his demise or perhaps to his delight? The murky water below reveals no secrets and summer is long gone. There are no answers, only imagination in the parallel world, and the story ends however you want it to.

days in the shine like jewels for me in the depths of winter. The long and lingering daylight, katydid choruses and buzzing bees all set the perfect stage for what I consider the royalty of the meadow. This lived up to that title, lit up by the afternoon sun like a painting on black velvet.
