Last weekend I had the pleasure of joining the guys over at the Marvel Card Collectors Podcast. Thank you so much for having me, it was great fun!

Oliver Harbour, the UK based artist responsible for 13 (yes 13!!) of the most incredible original artworks in the Marvel Flair 2024 set, joins the gang this week.

Not only do we hear Oliver's journey into the giddy world of Marvel cards, but we also get an insight into his process, the concepts behind each piece AND how he's making the thumbnail sketches of this work available for collectors to buy.

This episode stands as proof that Ian isn't a sweary outlier of the English and that English people generally can and will drop F bombs as needed.

“Blade”

I loved getting to paint this dynamic scene of a somewhat cynical and cold character in a colourful and saturated environment.

Introducing – Blade! Otherwise known as Eric Brooks. (Or Daywalker.)
This guy slays harder than RuPaul in Soho. Which in fact where this character, Eric, was born! (According to the Marvel Wiki!) I wanted to show him jumping out high building onto his unsuspecting vampire victims below.

“Green Goblin”

I was so happy to get the chance to paint this maniacal flying Halloween-nightmare!
Introducing – Green Goblin! Otherwise known as Norman Osborn.

One of the three archenemies to Spider Man, this criminal mastermind is a force to be reckoned with.

This was a hard painting to get right, I tried many different poses but ultimately, I wanted to show the bat shaped rocket board and his ‘Bag of Tricks’ flying behind him using the explosion of a pumpkin-bomb so carve out a solid silhouette. A lot going on and a lot of action!

“Molecule Man”

Going back to the guy who got released in the promo art!

Introducing – Molecule Man! Otherwise known as Owen Reece.

We move on from the telepathic to psionic, and what a gift this one was granted.
He was such a cool character to paint! I loved getting as many vibrant colours and particle effects as I could into this one!

Reece learns eventually that he not only wields control over all molecules down to a subatomic level to transform them into whatever he desires, but as his knowledge grows, he uses his abilities to create force shields, destructive beams, and even portals to travel great distances. In time, Reece understands he possesses the power to warp reality itself and not only transform molecules, but transmutate them as well. This ability makes him literally one of the most powerful beings in the universe.

“Professor X”

From one exceptionally powerful telepath to another.

Introducing – Professor X! Otherwise known as Prof. Charles Francis Xavier.
Possibly one of the most well-known teachers and founder of the school for the gifted. He’s got some super powerful abilities and in interesting family. Let alone his friends!

He was such a great character to paint a true honour to depict him using his telepath abilities.

“Sentry”

I feel it’s appropriate to post this one today as it’s finally getting a bit warmer in the UK!

Introducing – Sentry! Otherwise known as Robert (Bob) Reynolds.

He’s quite a complex one, as many are with deep inner struggles, which he has to fight off his dark counterpart, known as the Void. Sentry, when stable is thought to have the power of a million exploding suns with virtually limitless power and psychic strength. Pretty cool!

Introducing – Carnage!

A master of chaos. When I was a kid, I first saw Carnage painted by Boris Vallejo and from that point onwards I was hooked. To get the opportunity to paint him was just phenomenally exciting for me!

Don’t get me wrong, I still like a bit of Venom, and Tom Hardy helps of course. A little symbiosis ever heart anyone, right?

“Gamora”

Following on from the previous post, here’s a second character you may recognise, although changed from her MCU look as this is based on her comic book appearance.

Introducing – Gamora!

Fierce and unrelenting, she dominates the battlefield with her intelligence and strength. This was a fun one to paint, not only because she is f’n awesome, but I got to redesign her out-fit from her more risqué 60’s look, to a more Disney friendly aesthetic.

This lovable, ever so slightly broken, yet resilient little creature touches our hearts because of his story and his struggles. Not only that, but the friends he makes along his journey. That’s what life is all about – connections.

Introducing – Rocket Racoon! I adore this character.

Also, I don’t know how many times I cried watching Guardians of the Galaxy III. If you haven’t seen it, go watch it.

I'm delighted that I can finally share with you the work I have been holding on tight to for over 2 years!

I’m hugely grateful to have worked with Erika Klock, who’s art direction was superb. Thank you for trusting me with so many characters!

Having had all of the cards I painted for the Marvel Flair 2024 set spoiled on the box opening by Spidey Hits Marvel Cards, I can finally show you the paintings I did for Marvel!

Also a shout out to Beniamino Bradi - Bradoart for having his Auto card pulled on stream! Congrats man!
