So Paula at Cloud café calls me yesterday to tell me that a ‘nice French couple’ want to buy my photograph ‘Hover girl’ 2018? From the North Wall Series I left my gardening and went up directly to say hi. I got chatting with Minko and his family. We arranged to meet for brunch this morning and turns out that Boston living, Bulgarian-born graphic designer, Minko is celebrating his birthday in Ireland.
Having established that the girl in the photo is called Cadie and that she was running an errand to buy a birthday card at the, then open, K&A corner shop it was decided to rename the image ‘Cadie’s Errand’
We chatted about everything from hating the Russians 😅 to Gutenberg’s diagram. Let’s say I was educated a little by Minko. I wasn’t then surprised to hear that he is a teacher too. His parther Marinella works as an architect in Emerson college Boston. She is the beautiful image of her daughter who works as relations manager in a audiobook publishing We spoke about finding the right home for my series of images: ‘Qui es mort?’’ This series which describes the recent proliferation of Irish 🇮🇪 flags hanging at essentially, half mast, is casting a wider net in order to find the correct location - North Strand is, after-all ground zero for the phenomenon of the hanging of flags on street lamp posts. We discussed how the hanging of the flag in any country comes with a series of meanings and interpretations and above all is an emotive topic drawing emotional grit from individual allegiances, nationalism, pride & prejudice.
I described contacting the Irish Arts Centre in New York to see if they would be interested in hosting the exhibition. In the meantime Minko tells me that he knows a university who might have a space available. I’m grateful for the call from Paula yesterday which set in train a series of events which could very possibly bizarrely end up in an exhibition of photographs of Dublin’ North East Inner city in the USA.Hopefully the guys will reach their destination this afternoon of the International centre of the image in North Wall which conveniently is like Cloud café open on Sundays.
