Happy World Hippo Day!
Hippos may look calm and peaceful, but they are wild, territorial, and incredibly strong. Every year, many lives are lost due to closeness or careless encounters; and hippos are among the most dangerous animals in Africa.
When we encountered this hippo in the Okavango Delta, it popped it's eyes and ears out of the water to check out the threat our passing boat might present. We made sure to give this hippo a very wide berth.

It’s Antarctica Day! Celebrated annually on December 1st, Antarctica Day commemorates the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959, which protected Antarctica from any military activity and designated the continent as a "natural reserve, devoted to peace and science".

Happy World Elephant Day! The desert-roaming elephants of the Namib desert are a unique version of the African bush elephant. They have developed certain adaptations for desert life, which include broader feet and legs that appear longer, but only because their bodies are smaller. They can go without water for up to three days and may walk up to 70 kilometers at night to find water points, which is the cause of their bigger feet.

For the last couple of weeks, I have been seeing this family of raccoons while walking in our local park. The mother is raising her babies in the hollow of a tree, and if you are patient, you can see them poke their curious little heads out from time to time. Lots of people on their walks stop by and admire them with the caveat that they hope they stay up in the tree and don't come into their backyards.
We often forget that wild animals don’t just vanish when cities are built. Raccoons don’t come into our spaces to be troublemakers; they come because they have nowhere else to go to find a safe place to sleep, something to eat, and simply survive.
If we take a moment to look, we might see them differently—not as intruders, but as neighbors trying to live in a world that has changed without asking for their input.

I think the Leopard is one of the most magnificent big cats. The sleekness of its body, the stealthiness and agility of its movement and the way it stares at its prey. This leopard had its eyes on some Maasai cattle being herded through the Naboisho Conservancy in the Maasai Mara, Kenya. This was such a special sighting as leopards are one of the more difficult animals to spot on safari. We were blessed to see this young male on two occasions around its territory. Happy International Leopard Day!

Happy International Hyena Day!
Often seen as villainous scavengers, hyenas have an unfair reputation and are highly underrated. Hyenas are an incredible and interesting group of animals that play a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem. By scavenging, they clean the environment, prevent the spread of diseases, and promote ecological harmony, thus ensuring healthier habitats for all species.

Lesser Flamingo - International Flamingo Day

Did you know? A flock of flamingos is called a flamboyance—and it’s easy to see why! With their bright pink feathers, long legs, and graceful necks, these colorful birds command attention wherever they go.

There are six species of flamingo worldwide. They are highly social animals and often gather in large numbers.

I haven't shared many landscapes from this trip. However, for my final post of this series, this particular one truly captured my attention. It combines different elements that reflect my feelings during my unforgettable adventure in Antarctica, where I was inspired and in awe of this magnificent white continent. Antarctica is a challenging place to reach, but I feel compelled to return. The reasons are many: the tranquility, the isolation, the raw beauty, the vibrant colors, the wildlife, and certainly not least, the breathtaking landscapes and scenery.
