My latest video with the Jimny

I had so much fun driving through a snow covered landscape to cross the Pensi-La pass into Zanskar this April.Snow Chains - https://amzn.to/4cvdJaLRooftop Bo...

It is the story of how I went into the mountains above the Stongde monastery to document a yearly Yak roundup. The trip didn't go as well as I planned, mainly due to my lack of fitness and me getting frostbitten while camping up in the mountains.

After 8 long months in lockdown, I finally managed to visit the mountains last December. And what better place to rediscover this freedom than Zanskar.

I was very hesitant to travel anywhere during this pandemic. The last thing I wanted was to be an unwitting carrier and spread the virus to such remote places. So I tried to be as careful as possible and got permission from the concerned authorities as well as the local people before traveling anywhere. A lot of gratitude to all my friends who helped me on this trip.

Many thanks to Tsewang Dorjay from the Lingtse guesthouse in Leh. Lingtse has been my base for the last 3 winters in Ladakh. And Dorjay is one of the most genuine, helpful people that I have met on my travels. He was of immense help this winter, introducing me to locals from Zanskar, arranging interviews with monks and scholars in Leh, translating the interviews etc. I wholeheartedly recommend him for all your travel needs in Ladakh. You can reach him at 9906986664.

Also many thanks to Lobsang Wangtak from Stongde, Zanskar. He is a filmmaker and a social entrepreneur working to provide sustainable solutions for the challenges facing Zanskar. He is currently working on water-lift project to irrigate the village of Pischu. The same village where I spent over 35 days recovering from my frostbite. You can find more about his project on his website.

Finally, many thanks to Ven.Thupstan Paldan for patiently answering my questions about Ladakh and Zanskar. Ven.Thupstan Paldan is a renowned scholar in Ladakh and is the author of 'A Guide to the Buddhist Monasteries and Royal Castles of Ladakh'. One of the best books I have read about the Buddhist culture of Ladakh.

5 Years back I did a project for Enfield where I captured a few timelapse videos for them around . That project was the precursor to everything that you see on my channel today. This lockdown has allowed me to go through the old footage and make a tribute to that project. Here's to those old memories.

A short film about the Matho Nagrang festival held on March 9th and 10th of 2020 in Ladakh, India.

Many thanks to Lama Jamyang Tundup of Matho for explaining the details of the festival to me. The video just wouldn't be the same without his narration.

Itcho is one of the most isolated villages in the Kargil district of Ladakh (India). It is reachable only by a 10km trek across steep mountain trails which are buried by snow and avalanches during the winter months. And the only way to access Itcho in winter is by walking on the frozen Phu Lungma stream, making it a Chadar trek experience like no other.

This is a behind the scenes look at my short film about Itcho - 'A Village in Search of a Road'. Please watch it if you haven't already.

Itcho is a small nondescript village, deep inside the Bartoo valley, which is again an offshoot of the Suru Valley in the Kargil region of Ladakh. This is their story, the story the villagers wanted the world to see, hear and share. Hope their voices get heard by the right people.

Imagine Pin Valley some 30 years back. It was a world without cell phones, without television and without electricity even.

The main source of entertainment back in the day were the plays performed by Buzhen lamas and the Da Chang or archery competitions. The Buzhen lama tradition has almost died down in the recent years but Dachang is still held all over Spiti and Pin Valley during the winter months. It brings people together and gives them a chance to break the winter monotony. And more importantly it is a lot of fun!

Winters in Pin Valley can be described in 3 words.
Cold, Windy and White.
Life is tough here, but also very beautiful.
Even the mundane day to day activities look spectacular in the winter setting.
The people, restricted to their homes in the winters, are both cheerful and industrious.
They wisely spend their winter downtime by performing various activities and chores that they just woundn't have the time for in the summer months.

In this episode we will see how the people of Todnam prepare for and live their lives during the harsh winters in Pin Valley.

This is a story very close to my heart.
The story of a village that gave me refuge after a snowstorm.
The story of a family that took me in and made me one of their own.
The story of a culture changing rapidly while also staying true to its roots.
The story of one of the most beautiful, harshest places in our country.
This is the story of Todnam.
The Little Village with a Big Heart 💖
