These people redefined the word ‘resilience’ for me.
I was incredibly blessed to shoot for the incredible organisation on their scout trip to Kenya in January.
We ventured into the Turkana Desert to visit Milimatatu Girls School where hundreds of girls had been given a chance, an escape, from the harsh reality of what it is to simply be born a girl.
In these isolated regions of Africa, 1 in 4 girls are victims of child marriage. They are sold by their families in exchange for their bride price which is usually live stock, 100 goats, camels, sheep etc. and many don’t survive child birth as they haven’t fully developed yet.
The rainbow of emotions I experienced, sadness, anger, confusion, was outshone by the immense joy and praise the girls at Milimatatu had. Despite the unfathomable reality they had escaped, they were some of the most joyous women I had ever met. I learnt so much from them, as cliche as it sounds. The fulfilment they had from simply getting to learn, dream and most importantly..dance every day, was one of the most eye opening, slap in the faces I’d ever experienced.
I cannot wait to return and grateful to have now joined the team at whose mission is to fight the food insecurity which leaves so many vulnerable communities in the hands of exploitation and trafficking.
Asante Sana Kenya x
