The Night-Blooming Cereus or “Queen of the Night” is a cactus thats flower blooms just one magical night a year, typically around the same day in late May or early June. They can be found in abundance in St Petersburg, Florida, where they adorn the brick walls, fences and trees of the neighborhood streets, particularly in Old Northeast. The flowers begin opening at dusk, are in full display by midnight, and wither by sunrise, returning to their unassuming dormant state for another year.

This requires some imagination but you’re seeing the view from the top of a thirty foot tall Indian mound, deep in the wilderness of south Florida. Here the chief would sit in his hut and gaze out across a one hundred foot causeway, which was surrounded by nine foot walls, and into a large plaza, which held another large rectangular mound. The area would have been stripped of trees and vegetation so you could look out at all of this plus around ten more causeways, mounds and man made ponds. Today the whole area is completely grown over other than a modern swamp buggy roadway (which drives right over some of the earthworks). It would have been quite the scene two thousand years ago to see..
