I’ve never heard of this before!
This is a shell from distinct species of oyster called Magalana gigas.

Considered an invasive species in many non-native locations but it was introduced to New Zealand for aquaculture there.

Magalana gigas have, what I call, an impressive resume:
• highly resistant to diseases
• adaptable to varied temperatures and salinities
• known for rapid growth and high environmental tolerance
• most popular farmed shellfish worldwide
• accounts for over 98% of the world’s cultured oyster production.

My shell is from New Zealand’s Bay of Islands: a popular fishing, sailing and tourist destination in that country.

A friend gifted this oyster shell to me after visiting there.
I don’t know if the oyster was consumed or if the shell was a shore-walk find.
Either way I’m glad it made its way to me.
Otherwise Reconnaissance - that’s what I christened this Oyster Art - would still be undiscovered in this Magalana gigas in New Zealand!

Reconnaissance will be on display in my upcoming exhibit July 3-August 28 at Saint John Arts Centre, New Brunswick.

Guess what I did in Paris?

A photo of me near the Eiffel Tower was special but that’s something everyone does.

I did something I try to do during all my trips: I looked for 🦪 oyster shells —🇫🇷 French ones of course!

I went to the farmer’s Market and approached a few 👨🏻‍🍳 restaurants but left empty handed.

On my way back to the hotel I spied a curbside vendor selling shucked oysters 
to passersby.

After describing Oyster Art he said if I returned the following evening he would have shells for me. . . and he did!

Some were labelled from Arcachon and others from Normandie.

Back home in my studio I discovered Resolute hiding in one of the Normandie oyster shells.

🌎 In my upcoming exhibit I’ve been trying to include Oyster Art that’s been inspired by oyster shells from around the world. Mais oui, France is now added to the roster.

A 30”x20” canvas print of Resolute is included in my upcoming exhibit at the Saint John Arts Centre July3–August 28.

All my Oyster Art is printed at InColor located in Moncton, NB.

🌎 I’m trying to explore oyster shells from around the world.

I’m so thankful that Wendy, my Oyster Art Angel,😇 sent a collection of oyster shells from Santa Catalina, Panama.

I absolutely love the very unique, graphic composition discovered in the Eastern Oyster.

I’ve christened it Perspicacity which means acuteness of discernment or understanding.

📝 My poetic observation: Life’s experiences lend to the perspicacity of conversation.

This oyster art has the ability to generate diverse conversations. A 23”x35” acrylic print of Perspicacity is included in my upcoming exhibit at the Saint John Arts Centre July3–August 28. I hope to hear some conversations it prompts at the opening on July 3, 5–7pm.

Are you ready for something new?

Delectation will be on display as a 36x36 canvas print during my exhibit of 27 Oyster Art pieces at July 3–August 28!

🌏 “A Closer Look: glimpses of an unseen world!” will feature pieces inspired by oyster shells from around the world.

🦪 I discovered Delectation in the shell of an oyster grown by , the oldest aquaculture farm in Plymouth, MA.

It was sent to me by one of my Oyster Art Angels . Kristine’s colourful paintings connect us with ordinary subjects, in an extraordinary fashion —something we both share and enjoy.

Delectation, a composite of 17 separate photos, has a very different aesthetic from most pieces in my collection. Its soft colour palette and graceful lines prompted my poetic observation: Great art steeps us with the delectation of its story.

In the weeks to follow I will be releasing more additions to the Oyster Art collection.

Where to next? I took a Viking River Cruise (stellar company that thinks of everything) from Amsterdam to Budapest with my best friend Deborah. She lives in Edmonton so it was fantastic to spend 17 days together. So much so we’re planning another trip. Suggestions anyone?

Is the one I chose a keeper❓

That's me in 2022 standing on a 'ginormous' pile of oyster shells at F***y Bay Oysters in British Columbia.

I'm often asked if I can tell by looking at a shell if it has that something special to photograph. The answer is a resounding NO!

Faced with so many shells to choose from it was a challenge to collect just a few to take home with me?

Here's one that I photographed with my macro gear and have it digitally displayed in a room. I think it helps when assessing a piece.

The composition is unique and interesting but does it have enough abstract art qualities to be welcomed into the Oyster Art collection?

Since I'm on the fence I'd like to have you weigh in with comments:

I visited the event last night where I met some new to me NS oyster growers and finally met, in person, Colton DEon and his lovely wife Ashley. Several years ago Colton provided me with some of shells where, in one of them, I discovered https://oysterart.ca/oyster/predilection/.

I thanked Colton for his support of my work with a copy of my book.

I was so happy to bump into Islander and her husband last night as they took in the event.

When I decide to video myself something important must be happening.

I’ve been waiting a few years to share the news about “A Closer Look: glimpses of an unseen world”, an exhibit I’m having at the Saint John Arts Centre in NB.

It’s in a 1,200 sqft space reserved just for Oyster Art and it is open for two months this summer: July 3-August 28.

I’m so excited to have this opportunity to display my artwork.
