There wasn’t a lot of effort in their fighting… more playful banter than serious business. Towards the end, they seemed to get a bit bored 😂

Botswana, you are spectacular.

Everything about what I saw in Botswana was special. Of course the animals but the people too, the big skies, the stillness that has such sizzling energy, everything and more. This is a taste of what is to come from me over the next few weeks as I have break from my travels. If you have a chance to visit Botswana, just know that a piece of it will follow you home in your heart.

Recently I am come back from a tour of Botswana (Chobe, Delta & Kalahari), hosted by the amazing who pushed me to think more creatively, huge thanks.

Fred: “How low are you going?”

He was having a glorious bath in the Chobe. He had swum over from the Botswana side to frolic in the Namibian side of the Chobe. Luckily, we were in one of the photo boats, able to watch from a safe distance. Normally your camera is on a tripod to capture the action, but this scene called for me to be as low as possible. With my camera just above the water, I did manage to dip my lens once or twice into the water. But I think it was worth it. Do you think it was worth a wet lens?

“Oh darn it, they caught me in Marjaryasana pose and now I am stuck”

The joy to see this cat tangled in the branches for comfort was beyond words. She would soon change her position to something more relaxing but either way this was a dream come true for me.

As a young kid, I remember seeing a cheetah climbing a tree, on a poster, in the library. From that moment onwards, I was hooked. My dream was to see that scene in person. It’s taken years but finally it came true. Swipe to see this beautiful girl climbing down.

The disheartened, the wariness, the surprise. The eyes of these young ones can clearly tell their own story.

The lion cub was on a mission with his family but it was pouring with rain and it was cold. The elephant calf did not know what he had come across, immediately thinking it could be a threat. The zebra foal was enjoying the warmth of the sun, to be surprised by others around him.

Chongo: “I don’t watch my back. Everything behind me is already afraid.”

Once a member of the formidable “Six Pack” coalition, this is Chongo, a celebrated Masai Mara King.

It was a lazy afternoon, for the lions, to lie around and every now and again raise their eyes to stare down the barrel of the lens. But for me, this was the first time I had seen the intensity in real-time. Its all very well to see the iconic portrait online or printed but to experience it for real is something else. Even if he has only one working eye!

Tiberius: “What are we guarding?”
Marcus: “Everything beyond” (nodding in the direction of the adults)
A beetle crosses the rock near Rufus’s paw. He watches it intensely, then looks up at Kesi.
Tiberius: “A scout?”
Marcus: (narrowing eyes) “Let it through. We don’t want a war. Not today.”

You don’t always get ‘the shot’, but this moment made me smile

We were a bit late to this party, with vehicles already scattered around, we weren’t getting front row seats. But I loved the interaction these two cubs were having across from each other either side of this small ravine. They seemed to be having a game of whose side is better. While others were looking at the impressive lion adults to the right of these cubs, I was peering through a vehicle to focus on these two. Yes, I was looking through the windows of another vehicle, to see these two cubs playing. I had to be in the exact spot I was to have everything align so I could shoot through the neighbouring vehicle. Next time, I should really take a bts shot too. I think our guide and driver thought me mad that I had to capture this moment.

No, its not the greatest shot, but these two cubs made me smile. And isn’t this part of all that we do, enjoy the little moments.

And then the vehicles parted, and ‘Marcus’ came walking towards us. That was ‘the shot’.

Finding the calm in the chaos.

If you have ever been to the Cape Cross Seal Colony then you will know about the noise, the smell, the (seal) crowds. As you step out of your car, your senses are hit from all directions. Getting onto the walkway is easy, as long as you have no interlopers sunning themselves. We did have one at the end of the walkway so we didn’t manage to make it to the end but we were still immersed amongst thousands of seals. In every direction you can see wriggling noisy blubber fur balls. They are swimming, suckling, fighting each other, sunning their whiskers, clambering over each other, talking or is it shouting at each other, diving, snuggling, playing, everything.

It takes a while to get there from Swakopmund, through what feels like deserted roads but its worth the journey to see this spectacle.

With just over an hour of good light, there was a lot to take in before having to high tale it out of there at closing time. Note to self, next time make sure to get there earlier to spend more time with them. Even with all the chaos, most were trying to enjoy the last rays of sun, warming themselves, with eyes closed and heads flung back. Hence the calm in the chaos.

The Cape Cross has a dark history of harvesting Guano and Seals. It took less than 10 years after a concession was granted for the rocks to be stripped bare and the seal population to dwindle. After that activity dwindled over 100 years ago, it’s now a home to the largest colony of Seals, in the world.

Even in the windiest of times, a little determination (and a lot of fish) can keep us going.

Gliding effortlessly on strong winds by the cliff, auditioning for a role in “Puffin Top Gun,” this maverick was one of many taking to the skies off the Isle of May.
