Alpha Uncharted began with a long-term dream: to grow into a boutique travel company dedicated to sustainably and responsibly bringing the wonders of the natural world to you. That vision is still very much alive, and once our home renovation project is finally complete, I’ll be dedicating more time to bringing that dream to life.

The past three years have been incredibly busy and full on—two babies, two international moves, lost furniture, and an ongoing renovation project (for anyone considering tackling an abandoned cortijo… run!).

Despite the chaos, I’ve kept creating whenever I could, and I finally feel like I’m in a space—both professionally and creatively—where I can truly focus on growing as a photographer and writer. I’m currently working on several children’s books inspired by my daughters and by Kev’s and my adventures across Africa.

With this shift, I’ll also be separating my social media accounts. .mongiat will be the home for my photography, writing, and creative work.

A recent highlight has been having my photograph of a Red Deer stag featured on the cover of Irish Wildlife Magazine—a milestone I’m incredibly proud of.

Please head over to my new Instagram page .mongiat and give it a follow. Your support means the world to me.

Hᴀɴɢɪɴɢ Cᴀᴛ

It’s and I find myself feeling slightly melancholy today. I have been reflecting on our journey thus far and always find myself going, “wow!”

Looking back at the past three years, it’s been a whirlwind of change and growth (at times very uncomfortable growth)! There have been days where we have wanted to give up. We have almost called it quits on our lives overseas and on each other, but somehow we always manage to dig deep, listen to each other, support one another, and move forward.

Our hearts still yearn for the South African bushveld, and I think I will always refer to the country of my birth as home.

But as the days turn into months, and despite my nostalgia, we are feeling more at peace with our decision to settle in Spain - it is a beautiful country with so much to offer.

I look forward to exploring more of our adopted country as we build our dream home.

How do you cope with feelings of nostalgia?

Iᴛ’s ʙᴇᴇɴ ᴀ ᴍɪɴᴜᴛᴇ …

I cannot believe how quickly time has flown by. So much has changed in our lives over the last two years.

We welcomed the newest member of our herd in March 2023 - our precious daughter, Zoey. She has turned a year old already! She walks, says a few words and has fire for days. To say Kev and I love her is the understatement of the century. She makes our world infinitely brighter.

I am still taking photographs whenever I have a moment. My passion for wildlife photography has only grown and my hedgehog photograph was published in the Irish Wildlife Trust’s 2024 calendar. I would like to say thank you to all the wonderful people at IWT for selecting my photograph to be a part of such a wonderful initiative. All proceeds from the sale of the calendar will go toward funding their ongoing work to protect wildlife.

We also decided to make the move from Ireland to Spain in August 2023. These sun-worshipping South Africans need our Vitamin D ☀️

During our move, our furniture went missing. As you can imagine, it was the most stressful two months of our lives. If it weren’t for Kev and his amazing ability to get things done, we would still be sitting on the floor and cooking out of borrowed pots and pans. One of these days, I will tell you the story. It certainly reads like a horror/mystery novel.

In January 2024, we purchased our new home, or rather, our project home - it currently has four walls and a roof 😅 We are completely DIY’ing it on an absolute shoestring budget. Our cortijo has 2.5 hectares of land, some of which is planted with a beautifully established olive grove, almond trees, pine trees, and we even have an apple tree 🌳

Our goal is to live sustainably and entirely off-grid. We want to give Zoey the opportunity to come running inside at dusk, dirty and breathless from time spent exploring the great outdoors.

It’s Mutual

Here, a red billed oxpecker takes a break on a giraffe.

Oxpeckers and mammals like giraffe share a mutualistic relationship, in other words, they benefit from each other. Oxpeckers eat ticks and other parasites that live on the skin of giraffe, and other species such as rhinos, buffalos, and zebra. In turn, the giraffe receives a thorough pest removal.

Have a wonderful weekend!

The Lion King

We visited Karoo National Park in beginning of 2021 and were absolutely blown away by the vastness of this 88 000 hectare slice of heaven.

As we left for afternoon game drive, we spotted herds of Cape mountain zebra, a pair of klipspringer, springbok, and kudu.

About an hour into our game drive, we looked to the left and there not but 20 metres from the road, lay two male lions and two female lionesses. We were lucky enough to have this incredible sighting all to ourselves for the rest of the afternoon.

As golden hour approached and the day began to cool, the lions stood up and walked next to the road.

Here, one of the males stood against the backdrop of the stunning Nuweland mountain range and scanned the surrounding landscape, giving me the opportunity to capture this magnificent moment.

Goliath

Here, a Goliath Heron stands poised against the backdrop of the magnificent Chobe National Park along the Chobe River. Goliath Herons can stand up to 1.5 meters tall (just to give you an idea of how tall that is, I stand 1.66 meters tall).

The Goliath Heron can be found in both coastal and inland habitats, with a particular fondness for shallow water margins of lagoons, lakes, and large river systems.

The Chobe River is one of Kev and my favourite places on Earth, with a large concentration of elephant herds, and extraordinary biodiversity, this is one of the most spectacular wildlife regions on the planet.

Irish Sunset

We had taken a road trip from Killarney to Malin Head (which is the most northerly point of Ireland). As we were driving back to our B&B, we found this secluded, rocky slice of heaven.

I set up my camera and Kev and I watched the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean - not a bad way to end an already perfect day.

And Stretch…

Here, a White-Throated Swallow stretches in the afternoon sunlight within the Pilanesberg National Park.

These birds are Intra-African migrants and prefer to spend winters in the DRC, Angola and Zambia, leaving Southern African around April/May for warmer climes.

White-Throated Swallows prefer airborne insects and will often be seen swooping and diving in pursuit of tasty insects.
