Light From Heaven (Martin Dudley Istanbul 2025)
At first glance, one would think that this was one of my creative images or even the work of a creative Photoshop Plugin.. well it's not.
It Is one of Istanbul's hidden architectural marvels, This is the inner dome of a modern Mosque and offers photographers a unique interplay of light, shadow, and intricate geometry. Its modern Islamic architecture contrasts with the historic cityscape, creating a fresh and dynamic perspective that reflects Istanbul’s evolving cultural architectural landscape.
From a photographic perspective, this mosque offers a completely different canvas. The soft, diffused light through the geometric windows bathes the interiors in a serene glow, creating perfect moments to capture the play of natural light on intricate calligraphy and architectural details. The elegant arches and towering minarets contrast beautifully against the Istanbul skyline, making for a striking composition.
Looking up into the inner dome of this beautiful Mosque is like looking into a kaleidoscope of light and colour. You feel like you are being pulled upwards because of the dome's spiral effect twisting toward heaven.
Although an Islamic place of worship I was drawn to the three spirals of glass coming down from the center of light which reminded me of my Christian Faith of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

I can't wait to share this amazing location with the photographers that will be joining me on my Istanbul workshop in 2025

The Whirling Dervish
The whirling dervishes dance is a meditative practice and worship ceremony that involves spinning in circles to a musical accompaniment. The dervishes believe that spinning unites them with God.
The ceremony begins with prayers and Quran verses, and then the dervishes rise to salute each other. They take their places around a circular floor, spin to a trance-like state, and turn their right hands upward toward God and their left hands downward toward Earth. The ceremony ends with more prayers.

Yeni Cami Mosque in Istanbul
As a photographer and artist, the mesmerizing blue hues of the Yeni Cami Mosque in Istanbul never fail to captivate my eye and inspire my creativity. Built in the 17th century, this architectural masterpiece stands as a testament to Ottoman grandeur, but it’s the intricate tile work—drenched in shades of blue—that truly steals the show.

The blues of the Yeni Cami range from soft, almost ethereal tones to deep, rich cobalt, creating a stunning interplay of light and shadow that invites the lens to explore every corner. These colors, woven into the mosque’s tiles and domes, evoke a sense of calm and reverence, making each visit a profound experience. For photographers, it's a playground of textures and patterns, while for artists, it's a palette of history and culture waiting to be reinterpreted.

Istanbul’s magic truly comes alive in places like this, where art and architecture blend in perfect harmony. it will be one of the highlights of my Istanbul Workshop 2025

The Maidens Tower (Martin Dudley Istanbul Workshop 2025)
The sunset was pure magic over one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks—the Maiden’s Tower (Kız Kulesi). Located on a small islet at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus, this beautiful structure has captivated hearts for centuries, standing as a silent witness to Istanbul’s history and legends.
It will be one of the locations I will be sharing with the photographers in my up-and-upcoming workshop in April 2025 in Istanbul
Originally built as a watchtower in 1110 by Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus, the Maiden’s Tower has served many purposes over the years—a lighthouse, a defense fortification, and even a quarantine station. Its history is woven with mystery, romance, and love, from tales of a sultan’s daughter hidden here to avoid a tragic prophecy, to legends of forbidden love and sacrifice.
As the sun set behind it, the tower’s silhouette against the blue and orange sky was a stunning reminder of Istanbul’s unique beauty and timeless charm. For a photographer, capturing this moment was like holding a piece of history and legend in a single frame. The Maiden’s Tower, bathed in golden light, continues to be a beacon of inspiration.

Martin Dudley Istanbul Photography Workshop 2025
“If the world was only one country, Istanbul would be its capital”. Napoleon Bonaparte.

As the late afternoon sun dips toward the horizon, the golden light in Istanbul casts a magical glow, and the majestic silhouette of the Fatih Mosque comes alive. Rebuilt in the 17th century, the mosque’s towering domes and minarets stand out against the vibrant sky, creating a dramatic contrast that’s impossible to ignore.

This moment will be pure inspiration for the photographers joining me on my Photography Workshop Istanbul 2025. The warm tones of the sunset wrap around the mosque, emphasizing its grand architecture while softening its edges into shadows. The interplay of light and darkness, with the mosque’s silhouette framed against the fiery sky, creates a scene that feels almost otherworldly—full of depth, mood, and timeless beauty.

Capturing the Fatih Mosque at this time of day offers an opportunity to play with light, shadow, and composition in ways that evoke emotion and tell a story. Whether through the lens or on canvas, the golden hour in Istanbul transforms this historic mosque into a masterpiece.

Istanbul, Galata
The City of Love.
As I prepare for my photographic workshop in Istanbul in April 2025, I find it hard to describe this beautiful city in words, and the only way I can express myself is through my camera and lens.
Walking through the streets of Galata in Istanbul feels like stepping into a living oil painting. Every corner tells a story. The light casts golden hues on ancient stone walls, while the narrow, winding streets pull you into a world of vibrant color and texture. The light dances off the cobblestone streets, reflecting on the historic walls, creating shadows that seem to have been brushed by an artist’s hand. As a photographer, it’s like capturing a masterpiece in motion, each frame a piece of timeless beauty. Galata isn’t just a location; it’s a canvas that paints itself.

To win the PSSA Impala Trophy
The final audited results of the Photographic Society of South Africa Impala Trophy have just been published and confirmed that I have won the overall Impala Trophy as well as the Colour and Black and white divisions.
The Impala Photographic Competition is without question the hardest photographic competition in Africa.
It comprises 23 local and 3 international salons over 12 months. All the totals are then added up and the photographer with the highest points in the Colour, Black and White, and Nature categories is awarded the Impata Trophy.
It takes a lot of time and one has to consistently enter each and every salon with good images to get the awards.
I managed to get 385 points which is equivalent to 385 acceptances in 26 salons,
An important thing to understand about photography is not to give up on yourself, for many years I pushed myself to learn more and more about this wonderful art. It's not about the equipment you use but more about how you see things and how you work with light.

Put aside all the negatives, concentrate on the positives, and go out and capture images for yourself, photos of things you enjoy, and the places you want to go to, the more you do this the better you get at it.

In this past year, so many of my students achieved amazing results on the Impala and other competitions and with their Honors results. Congratulations to you all on your amazing achievements.

I would like to thank all the members of the PSSA who worked so hard on this amazing competition as well as all the Salon directors and judges around around South Africa for your dedication to photography in our country

What an honor.
Not one but two of my images have been selected as the top 10 in the Africa Photo Awards.
"Children of Ukraine" shows the pain and hardships children face in Ukraine and other nations at war and "Faith," an old man with no legs in a wheelchair and a heart filled with Faith is up against some other amazing images in this category.
Please go take a look.
