Some of the most valuable photographs at a corporate event happen away from the stage.

The Amex Fine Wine Awards at Cavalli Wine Estate was a great example.

Beyond the formalities, there was a whole story happening around the room — people tasting, talking, comparing notes, discovering wines and simply enjoying the experience.

For me, photographing an event is about capturing all of those layers: the setting, the details, the people and the spontaneous interactions that give an event its character.

Because ultimately, good event photography shouldn't just record what happened. It should give you a sense of what it felt like to be there.

Sometimes an archive reminds you just how long a photograph can matter!

This week I received an unexpected request from the Marketing Department at the Baxter Theatre Centre, a client I worked with extensively over many years. They were looking for photographs from some of their earlier productions and asked whether I might still have copies in my archive.

Fortunately, I did.

So far, I've located around 5,000 images, with many more still to find.

Going back through photographs taken around 2008/09 has been a fascinating experience. Apart from rediscovering productions and people I photographed nearly two decades ago, I've also been struck by what today's editing technology can bring to these older digital files.

The technology has changed enormously. The moments haven't.

It's also been a reminder that professional photography isn't only about delivering images after a shoot. Properly maintained, a photographic archive can become part of an organisation's visual history — sometimes many years after the photographs were originally made.

These are just a few of the images I've rediscovered this week, including a photograph from Tokolosh that went on to be used for the show's promotional poster.

Some of the most important moments at a conference happen away from the stage. The presentations may be the reason people attend a conference, but often it's the conversations, introductions and connections between delegates that tell the real story of the event.

When I photograph conferences, I'm looking for both the important moments on stage and the spontaneous interactions happening around them.

Good event photography should leave a client with more than a record of who spoke. It should capture what it actually felt like to be there.

Sometimes the most important part of an event is the opportunity to ask a question.
Last Thursday evening I had the pleasure of photographing CFA Society South Africa's “A Day in the Life of a CFA Charterholder” event at Stellenbosch University.
The evening gave prospective candidates and students an opportunity to hear directly from CFA Charterholders about their careers, experiences and the realities of working within the investment profession.
A panel discussion was followed by questions from the audience and for me, those interactions are often where some of the strongest event photographs happen.
People listening. Thinking. Asking questions. Sharing experience.
Good event photography isn't only about recording who was on stage. It's about capturing the engagement between the people on the stage and those who came to learn from them.

Celebrating 70 years — and planting something for the future. 🌱
I had the pleasure of photographing ASATA’s 70th anniversary celebration at the beautiful Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West.
One of the highlights was seeing guests step outside and each take part in planting trees — a wonderfully visual way of marking an important milestone and leaving something behind for the future.
As an event photographer, these are the moments I enjoy looking for: the interaction, personalities and spontaneous moments that tell the story beyond the formal speeches and proceedings.
Congratulations to ASATA – the Association of Southern African Travel Advisors on 70 years.

Your image is your handshake online!

Before someone meets you, speaks to you or does business with you, there is a good chance they've already seen your photograph, your website, your LinkedIn profile or your company's visual content.

And in those first few seconds, an impression is formed.

Professional?
Approachable?
Credible?
Current?

Good photography isn't about making people look perfect.

It's about presenting people, businesses and brands authentically and professionally and making sure the visual impression matches the quality of the business behind it.

After more than 35 years behind the camera, that's something I still believe matters enormously.

Whether I'm photographing a conference, a laboratory, an executive portrait or a community initiative, the camera is only one part of the process.

The real challenge is understanding what matters most to the client and then capturing images that communicate that story clearly and authentically.

That's why no two assignments are ever quite the same. Every organisation has a different story. My job is to help tell it!

People see the camera.
What they don't see are the decades that went into knowing how to use it. Over the years, I've invested not only in professional cameras and lenses, but in the experience that allows me to walk into a conference, laboratory, show or boardroom and instinctively know where the story is.
Behind every assignment are years of learning, refining techniques, upgrading equipment, editing thousands of images and continually adapting to new technology. The camera is only one part of the process.
The real value comes from experience knowing when to anticipate a moment, where to stand, how to work unobtrusively, and how to deliver images that tell the story your organisation wants to share. That's what clients are really investing in.

Some of the most valuable conversations at a conference happen away from the stage.

They happen between sessions, at exhibition stands and over a cup of coffee, where ideas are exchanged, partnerships begin and business relationships are built.

Capturing these moments is just as important as photographing the keynote speakers. They tell the complete story of an event and showcase the value it creates for delegates, exhibitors and sponsors alike.

One of the things I enjoy most about conference photography is documenting not only what was presented, but also the interactions that make an event memorable.
