The gear has changed, but what I’m chasing hasn’t.

I’m still getting up before sunrise for that one seascape. Still driving off to find waterfalls. Still standing in the Overberg waiting for the light to hit the canola fields just right.

That’s what being a nature photographer is about for me. Getting out there and chasing the photograph, wherever that takes me.

The gear is there to help me push those ideas further and capture the images I have in my head.

And now, I’m excited to announce that I’m officially moving to Sony.

I can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes me.

Sony, let’s go.

These 5 photos almost never happened.

What you see is the final frame. What you don’t see is the planning, the failed attempts, the long drives, the 3am hikes, the weather, the waiting and a whole lot of uncertainty.

An aurora that hadn’t been seen like this for decades.

A lunar eclipse that forced a nearly 3-hour location change.

Lilies that bloomed at exactly the wrong time, until they didn’t.

A puncture that led to a rainbow behind giraffes.

And a photograph of the Milky Way over Lions Head that took 8 years and 4 consecutive 3am hikes to finally capture.

Photography isn’t always about getting lucky.

It’s about putting yourself in the right place, being patient, and continuing to chase the photograph when everything says it won’t happen.

Which one would you have kept chasing?

If you’re new here, welcome.

I’m Kyle Goetsch, a South African nature photographer, educator and storyteller. I left a career in science in 2018 to pursue photography full time, and since then I’ve spent my life chasing wild places, incredible light and the moments that make you stop and look twice.

From African wildlife and rugged coastlines to landscapes, astrophotography and everything in between, my goal is simple: to show the natural world in a way that makes you want to experience it for yourself.

I also teach photography through workshops, tours and online courses, helping photographers take their images to the next level, whether they’re just starting out or looking to refine their craft.

This page is where I share the places I explore, the images I create, the lessons I’ve learned and plenty of adventures along the way.

A random windmill, a yellow field of canola and a storm cloud in the distance. All the ingredients for some great landscape photography over the weekend in the Overberg region.
