Blue Cheeked Bee-eater (Merops persicus)
Afrikaans: Blouwangbyvreter
After three unforgettable weeks exploring the scenic Garden Route, we finally had the chance to connect with the elusive Blue-cheeked bee-eater in the Western Cape. The opportunity was too good to pass up, so we altered our plans and shortened our return journey to Cape Town. Instead, we opted to stay near the Gouritz River mouth, a strategic choice that would allow us to visit the bee-eater breeding colony at the river crossing.
Our decision paid off. As we prepared to leave the area, we were thrilled to spot a juvenile Blue-cheeked bee-eater, a fitting conclusion to our time spent in this remarkable region. The sighting marked the perfect end to our adventure, leaving us both satisfied and eager for future expeditions.
Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides)
Afrikaans: Ralreier
There's only a little to chase besides the Rare Squacco and the Goliath Heron. So a quick pop into the Poo Farm at Strandfontein, but neither of these two SA Rare Birds could be found. Ok, so one last drive around, and the next moment, the Squacco is flying above the vehicle. Happy to snap a few images before heading back to base.
It’s been an indoors kind of day 😩

Never a dull day in Cape Town
Early golden full moon reflecting over the tranquil mirror conditions over Rietvlei.

Bo Kaap
Painted in all the beautiful colours in celebration of the Cape Malay freedom from slavery. 🥰
The Portuguese and the Spanish started the slave trade, the Brits perfected it. The Dutch rule ended the slave strade for South Africans.
While walking around we met up with a painter who's job it is to paint these houses. He does not only paint the outside, but the inside too 🥰

Terrestrial Brownbull (Phyllastrephus terrestris)
Afrikaans: Boskrapper
After countless attempts, our persistence paid off with a remarkable sighting of the elusive Great Foret Bird. Known for its secretive nature, it has been challenging to capture clear images of this magnificent creature. However, luck was on our side this time, allowing us to finally document its beauty in stunning detail. This experience has been a triumph of patience and perseverance in my Forest Bird photography.

Nestled along the stunning coastline of South Africa, Cape Town, fondly known as the Mother City, exudes an enchanting blend of history and charm. One of its most captivating treasures is the historic Bo-Kaap, where time seems to stand still amidst a kaleidoscope of brightly painted homes. Each building tells a story, echoing centuries of cultural richness and diversity. Walking through its narrow, cobbled streets is like stepping into a living canvas, where every corner reveals a new burst of color and a deeper connection to Cape Town's multicultural heritage. Beyond its visual splendor, the Bo-Kaap offers a glimpse into the traditions and resilience of its inhabitants, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking to experience the soul of this remarkable city
I use Pro Capture for all kinds of applications, sometimes it is planned and sometimes I have the confidence to just give it a go. I've honed my skills using my garden birds as willing subjects, they will do anything for a sunflower heart! Check out my new Pro Capture eBook for the lowdown on this project, and many others, with all the settings / case studies and inspiring pictures. All from extensive experience in the field and it seems to be a big hit, with one client saying this yesterday "I’ve been using Pro Capture for four years now and after reading this, I have changed my setup to increase my chances of nailing the shot". That's all I want, to help others make the most of their cameras. Grab your copy of the eBook today by visiting the links in my bio (or DM me), you won't regret it!
The Arch like never seen before. Very special
One of South Africa''s few wilderness areas where you can meet nature on its terms, here are a few hiking trails in the Cederberg.

Kalk Bay Harbour, located in Cape Town, South Africa, is a charming and historic fishing harbor that dates back to the 19th century. It's renowned for its picturesque setting nestled between rocky cliffs and the ocean. The harbor is still active today, bustling with colorful fishing boats and local fishermen hauling in their catches. Visitors can explore the working harbor, enjoy fresh seafood at nearby restaurants, and browse quaint shops selling local crafts and art. Kalk Bay Harbour offers a glimpse into Cape Town's maritime heritage and remains a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
We were hoping for the Golden Full moon like we witnessed on Thursday but alas too much cloud cover. Turning around we were blessed with a dramatic kaleidoscope of warm reds and yellows as the sun tried to break through.

Aways special to enjoy the great outdoors especially in Cape Town, so many birds to enjoy, we had a wonderful flyby for two Peregrine Falcons as well as a juvenile close to Signal Hill, and then this beautiful Puffy on Lions Head, how privileged we are 😁
On the shores of the Langebaan legoon, we found a greater flamingo with a broken leg. We took it to SANCCOB saves seabirds in Tableview, but sadly he was too injured and euthanized. RiP baby 😓🌻🌹
Red-necked Phalarope(Phalaropus lobatus) Afrikaans: Rooihalsfraiingpoot A common visitor to the Kliphoek salt works river system. This bird is in full breeding plumage and one can clearly see why it's called a Red-necked Phalarope. We didn't have the best light but it was great seeing this special bird once again.
Rosy-faced Lovebird(Agapornis roseicollis) Afrikaans: Rooiwangparakiet Found across most parts of Namibia, we were pleasantly surprised to find a small feral population at Tyger Waterfront in Tygervally, Western Cape. The colour variations of the birds in these images also had us questioning the reasons behind this, is it the age of the birds or a mix between various species? Some assistance in this regard and the existence of this population would be welcomed so that we can better understand this species of Lovebird.
Pale Chanting Goshawk(Melierax canorus) Afrikaans: Bleeksingvalk We, unfortunately, did not find a large variety of raptors on our recent visit to the Montagu area. Only managed to record, African Fish Eagle, Jackal Buzzard, Black Sparrowhawk, Western Osprey, Rock Kestrel and a Rufous Breasted Sparrowhawk. The Pale Chanting Goshawk was our target Raptor, so we were very happy to get some footage of this fine adult specimen.
Sentinal Rock Thrush(Monticola explorator) Afrikaans: Langtoonkliplyser Female. Had the pleasure of this wonderful confiding bird that was in full song. We captured these images on the Lovers Lane walkway below Kanonkop in Montagu.
Black-winged Kite(Elanus caeruleus) Afrikaans: Blouvalk. We managed to spend a few days on the West Coast over the December holidays, these images were taken in Laaiplek. This was a very obliging Raptor while enjoying his breakfast.
Peregrine Falcon(Falco peregrinus) wonderful watching our resident Falcon. This bird has been around for some time now and it was fun capturing some footage of the fastest flying bird in the world near our home in Sunset Beach, Milnerton.
Wandering Albatross(Diomedea exulans) Afrikaans: Grootalbatros Flock to Marion 2022 aboard the MSC Orchestra. This is our tribute to the magnificent Wanderer. Little Bittern(Lxobrychus minutus) Afrikaans: Kleinrietreier We located this Little Bittern at the Sunset Beach dam a few months ago but it proved impossible to record or capture images. When assisting some birding friends the other day we located this little beauty in a location where he didn't flush as always. A huge thanks to Garret Skead for spotting this one. we the rest becomes history, we needed a few attempts but in the end, patients paid off and we managed to video the Bittern. We believe this is the first record for sunset Sunset Beach, how exciting.
Laughing Gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) Afrikaans: Roetvlerkmeeu We are feeling very privileged and grateful that we had the good fortune to find this vagrant #LaughingGull on the shores of #MosselBay, South Africa. I wonder who decided to call him a Laughing gull? Apparently, he has been a local for a while now, - seemingly enjoying the good life near the local cafe, but yet he was only recently identified by the avid birding community... who found us all flocking to Mossel Bay the past week. Some were lucky to catch a glimpse of the North American visitor between The #Point and #Santos Beach near the Mossel Bay Harbour! #birdoftheday #birdvideo SABC News https://youtu.be/ze94ZtEuHrE If you enjoyed this video, please stay connected #Like #Follow #Share 🥰😃🐦🐧🐤🐥🦆🦅

Verreaux's Eagle(Aquila verreauxii) Afrikaans: Witkruisarend Unique experience with the resident pair of Verreaux’s Eagles. The Juvenile consumed a Sacred Ibis for breakfast, a wonderful moment out with nature. A remarkable pair, we watched them as they soared overhead, flying in tandem, what a display of power and presence. Some moments we will remember and cherish forever.
This video was taken in the SANParks - West Coast National Park Can we please get some assistance on the ID of this bird? Thanks
Very happy to report what must be a healthy population of Owls on the west coast, we had a record sighting of 6 Barn Owls and 2 Spotted Eagle Owls in one day which must confirm this status. We also understand from our travels why we are so many dead Spotted Eagle Owls on the road verges. It would appear that they sit on the side of the road and get hit by passing cars, very sad indeed.
Rufous-Breasted Sparrowhawk (Accipiter rufiventris) Afrikaans: Rooiborssperwer Encouraging to witness how this breeding pair of Rufous-Breasted Sparrowhawsk have once again had success. YELLOW-CROWNED BISHOP (In full breeding plumage) /Euplectes afer Afrikaans: Goudgeelvink It has taken us 9 months to connect with this SA Rare Birds in the Weatern Cape.
