No place like home. Frozen Fynbos. South Africa's Cape floral kingdom is one of the richest areas in the world for plant biodiversity.
Of the 9,000 plant species found here, a majority are native fynbos vegetation, which covers the region's magnificent mountains, and lowland valleys and coastal plains.

I always jokingly refer to the cracks in the ice as God's signature. This time there is more than just a signature as the cracks in the ice steal the show and the flowers become the accessories.

3 flops in 1 day. It takes a special kind...
Many things can spoil an ice block. They can be cloudy from too many bubbles, the flowers can shift and drift from their positions, or they might crack too much, or in an unpleasant way, obscuring the flowers. All of them happened yesterday. It was the first sunny day in a long time. I lined up three blocks, just in case something goes wrong with one of them. (of course something went wrong with all of them.) It takes a special kind of person to do something that does not work 9/10 times, over and over again. I am a little bit special....Outtakes.

and the winner is...these are the top 3 sunflowers from over 300 photos I took of them at different angles and states of melting. (in order of my importance) I love the deep cracks in this one, not only does it scatter the light in odd directions but it also warps the sunflowers in places. My perfect photo would look as if a painter went mad with some palette knives and big fat dashes of bright paint.
