This is how you buy banana in Malawi 🇲🇼 we stopped bought a bunch of bananas and plantain threw it on the roof and carried on driving.

Whenever we stopped we would just grab one and sometimes people would laugh at us and ask for one.

The bananas were much nicer tasting than store bought ones we get here. Not as perfect and still had some seeds in them but tasted a lot more real.

Walked into a rural barber shop where there were a few young men sitting inside. I asked if I could take a picture. They were a bit shy but also with a sense of pride. After I took the picture they all started laughing at the situation.

A very special moment that we were so lucky to encounter.

Driving in honestly the middle of no where on the way to Salema we were driving through a tiny village where two Gule Wamkulu tribesmen happened to be walking past at that very moment.

They are part of the last of a remaining secret tribe in Malawi that dates back to the great Chewa Empire of the seventeenth century and has survived though all the countries changes, political as well as religious and survived.

To see them traveling and not as part of an organised ritual was truly special and very lucky.

Driving through rural Malawi we saw this woman selling local corn cooked on the side of the road, we stopped hoping to try some while our fixer jumped out to speak to her.

Next thing all the kids in the small village all run to see what’s going on.

I jumped out the car to get a feel of the light, while she roasted us some corn, over the coals so similar to the Hibachi grillI I use at home, slowly turning each cob while it roasts. I took a shot of her with all the children staring at us from a safe distance from all the strangers.

Driving in rural Malawi on a Sunday you see everyone so proud walking in there Sunday best to and from church.

We stopped to buy fruit on the side of the street in the middle of nowhere and this gentleman walked past looking so dapper and proud but was shy to be photographed.

Our fixer Simon jumped in and convinced him. He was a bit nervous at first but I chatted to him and he started to trust me.

We were driving on a long road in the middle of nowhere where and saw these 5 people on a bike hours from civilisation so we stopped to ask if I could take a picture.

The lady in the middle gestured for me to come to her so I did and she proudly showed me her fresh newborn baby.

Turns out she had just had her baby and her sister and her were taking a bike taxi home from the hospital which must have been hours of driving as there was nothing around them.

Seeing the kids playing and living their lives everyday without technology makes you think they live a richer life. Maybe we are the poor ones.

Man walking home with his new roof for his house.

A lot of people in Malawi cannot afford metal roofs so they walk for kilometres to get straw so that they can replace their roof before the rainy season start’s.

They don’t have much but yet I have never met more happy and proud individuals as I have met in Malawi. 🇲🇼

When I was shooting in Malawi for I took my old 1970s medium format Mamiya film camera with.
Once returning I went to get my film developed and I realised that’s lugging that 5kg piece of metal and glass was well worth it.

The next posts will be the film shots I got back in there original 6x7 film format.
