For many people in Cape Town, the only photos they have of themselves or family are those like the one below. These were taken by the roving photographer employed by Movie Snaps, whose job it was to take snaps of people walking down this stretch of pavement next to the Cape Town post office.
Leon and I are 4 years old in the picture, and I always asked whether that was my grandfather or his brother Bertie walking behind us. But he was just some random oupa.
My mother used the picture as "evidence" of the difference in our personalities. She pointed out that Leon was holding her hand, while I was "big man", doing my own thing. She mentioned that, even as babies, our nanny mentioned that "Hennemannie" wasn't as tactile and sociable as "Lonnie", and that I tended to be happy being by myself.
